Pissed I-77 if you gotta do an Interstate....

don't do I-77 in Virginia. NC line to the WVA line is a speed trap! Especially near Fancy Gap & Hillsville VA!

That's a 70 mile stretch of road...
I used to drive that frequently and never noticed anything out of the ordinary. Probably a run up to Labor Day thing. Thanks for the heads up though.

Don't get on 19 thru Summersville, WV if you think that 77 is bad.

I've been ticketed in Summersville. Had to do their ridiculous online driver's ed course to avoid going to court. I think it was only $250 or so... IIRC, the speed limit goes up and down quite a bit on that road with no apparent reason why other than revenue enhancement.

That little town made over $600K from speeding tickets alone a few years ago.

I77 is bad near the tunnels, they nab you coming out when you are running 65+ in a 55.
The thing I have learned is, don't speed in VA.

p.s. I81 going into TN is bad too.

I got a break

I was on my way to the BMWMOA in Missouri and got stopped for 95 in a 55 on I77 in VA.

I was going through my tankbag to get my papers when the officer spotted my old Colt Peacemaker. We talked guns while he ran my tags. Wrote me a warning for a bad brake light.
sometimes you get lucky

Exactly. The entire state of VA is commonly known to be a speed trap. It's simple, don't speed in VA. +3 is about all you can get away with.

The posted limit is 65 mph, it could easily be a 70 - 75 MPH road, but American drivers can't handle that speed & chat on their cell phones, while trying to figure out what a turn signal/lane change indicator is!

HAHAHA

WV Rt 60 through Shrewsberry, Smithers, Gauley Bridge and Anstead is TERRIBLE as well. IIRC the corrupt cops that made summersville infamous moved to Gauely Bridge. They would pull you over for a 26 in a 25. Pulled over several of my jeep buds with the doors off because they didnt have mirrors Always busting people towing jeeps since technically if you have a permanent plate on a car hauler it needs an inspection sticker.

But yes 77 through VA is rough during the summer months. The WV turnpike between Chylan and Beckley is a huge trap too. Only 60mph between the Cabin Creek and Mossy toll booths. Usually a few troopers around the Paint creek and Mahan exits.

Indeed. The VA State Police have a HQ in Wytheville, so they patrol I-81 and I-77 quite heavily in that area. Unless things have changed in recent years, it's also a base for their special pursuit vehicle operations. That's why you used to see all types of unmarked cars, jeeps, SUVs, vans, etc with hidden blue lights pulling motorists.

Yes, speed limits enforced on I77 at Fancy Gap / Hillsville

Yeah that section of I77 gets a lot of attention after all the mass pileups and deaths caused by fog on the road as clouds and cars vie for the same space at Fancy Gap. Locals avoid the road out of habit, it's too frequently a mess.
Heading up and down the hill there gets constant attention form all the LEO crowd.
If you want a fun ride though exit at the bottom of the hill (Loves truck stop exit) and take Pipers Gap road up, great ride. Nice scenic detour. Get on BRP at top of hill or coninue a short distance and pick up Chances Creek rd (fun also) and head back to Interstate.
Labor Day going to be very crowded along that stretch with the annual Hillsville flea market gathering so be warned. Memorial Day too.

Living in the region I know how severely they enforce traffic rules between the tunnels and especially the section going up and down the hill. It's a good area to slow down in, but then again our schools system enjoys the extra funding.
Summersville another story completely - I doubt the honesty of the enforcement officers. Yeah, I know, a harsh statement but I stand by it.

Gauley bridge nailed 5 of us for 33 in 25 zone. The sign was hidden behind a bridge sign. Known speed trap town.

Gauley Bridge got me for 26 in a 25 one time. Tried to fight and they literally told me that I was wasting my time. Ticket never showed up on my license. Oh well.
