on with the show. snoring ride along the big road to yuma and next day we cross into Baja @ Algodones. the nice man in immigration gets us on our way.

met some locals

from Algodones we zoom south. I was very surprised how green it was in that area. they have an excellent canal system setup for irrigation.
onto Mex 5 for the ride across the dry lake bed. now that was waaaay cool! like being on the moon.

I had good intentions of riding on it but then looked back at my heavily laden GS and decided not a good idea.

arrival in San Felipe. first Pemex on the hiway has no gas but the one in town does so we top up. I had no idea where we were going to stay but from reading numerous ride reports I knew the general location of Kiki's. a quick trip along the Malecon to see the dude wrestling the fish.

and after a few quick turns, we find Kiki's. right where I thought it was. trust me, that doesn't happen often. I arrange for a palapa. hop back on the bikes to find our spot, but what do i see over there??? 3 characters from Alberta on dirtbikes. sweet! we ride over and first thing we hear from any of them is "want a beer?" I am very quickly falling in like with Baja. this where Ged, Mark and Darren enter the picture. "sure, why not? camp setup can wait!".

Thanks for taking my kid to Baja. He has not stop eating since he got home. Lots of great stories too.

Nice placement of the pens. A good waitress comes prepared. Oh yeah!

Can't wait to see more.

our second day in Baja starts with well wishes from Ged and the boys. just as we are leaving they tell us to keep an eye out for 3 riders who left the day before us on a KLR and 2 650 X-challenges. ok.

and off we go towards Puertocitos and Coco's corner. the road is in great shape to Puertocitos and about a mile beyond where the asphalt abrubtly ends. then it becomes the road we went there to ride.

at this point we had been stopped twice by roadblocks manned by soldiers but after a few pleasantries we were on our way. we were quick to tell these nice kids with guns that we spoke only english and they were very willing to practice their spanglish on us. later we found out that if I asked "parlez vous Francais?" when they stopped us we were even quicker to be released as they had no idea what i was saying. that is all the french I know but they didn't need to know that. the whole trip we were stopped maybe 20 times and these guys were great. if there was a lineup of vehicles waiting to be inspected, we were most times waved right by. once i was asked for my passport and on another occasion i was asked to open my duffle bag but not my pannniers. steven was asked to open his tankbag once. on those ooccasions we were the only ones there and they were probably bored. no worries.
onto the fun road.

does he look like he's having fun?

look in the middle of this pic. see Steven?

and then you meet nice folks like this english icouple in their land rover.

more annoying vacation photos.
even Mr.Happy needs a pee stop every once in a while.

there is a GS in this pic somewhere.

and a kid on a KLR in the middle of the pic
anyone want to agree with me that this is ADVrider front page material? Steven took this and it is probably the best pic of the trip

as is the case with most pictures taken by amateurs, they don't just don't show it all. these pics maybe okay or not but they just don't show the immenseness of this place. the hills are rugged, the water is so clear, the sky is just so vast and blue. it is absolutley a beautiful place to ride. it is so beautiful a place to ride that it makes it hard to keep focused on the task at hand which is trying to not falloff the road. "Ooh what's that over there???' "whoops!". the stuff right in front of you is very distracting too. lots of large sharp, loose rocks that are there to make loud noises and big dents on the engine guard. hitting one of the imbedded ones can certainly make you refocus quickly. damn i loved this place!
