after tackling the road south of Puertocitos it was cool to see this sign. i have read so many other reports showing this sign it was satisfying to finally be there and see it for myself. we made it to Gonzaga Bay.
![]() grab some go-go juice at the Pemex and off we go. ![]() we had an date in Catavina that night so we rode right thru knowing we would be stopping here on the way back. next stop.......Coco's corner. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() it was a shame to be there and not have the chance to meet this famous man. we looked around for a bit and made sure everything was secure and fed the cats. off we go in the direction of Mex 1. but first we have to stop and check out the freaky Boojum trees. they look like something out of Whoville. I was tiold this is the only place they grow. ![]() this was a most exciting day as it was what I had come to Baja to see. the best part was knowing that in about a week and half from then I would get to do it all again. nice! we in no way set any land speed record coming down from San Felipe that day. just plodded along mostly in second gear and played it safe and enjoyed the scenery and stopped when we wanted to take pics.

after a restful sleep in Catavina we were on our way again. this night would see us in guerro Negro but first a sidetrip to Mission san Borja. after a pleasant ride we arrive at what has to be one of the most awesome sites in all of Baja. the mission and the surroundings were truly a spectacular site. everyone who rides in Baja should make a detour to see this place. met up with Angel who is a resident of San Borja and if memory serves me right, the 8th generation in this area. his ancestors were there when the original mission was built. Angel and his 2 brothers are lovingly doing much needed restoration work and are more than willing to be personal tour guides if you make the effort to ride in for a visit.

arriving at San Borja we park beside a very cool buggy. had a sticker that said "mears Gang" on the front. hmmmm.........interesting.
![]() as you enter the mission there is a register for guests to sign. being nosey I looked to see if others had been there that day and there were a few names that some might recognize. ![]() the names Roger/Carol Mears from North Carolina caught my interest. yep, that's right kids. Roger Mears and his loverly wife from the famous Mears racing family. ooh ahh oh! Steven, being more of a performance rally fan, did not share my excitement but now i had a mission at the mission....find Roger Mears. and that is what I did. they were being shown around by one of Angel's brothers and well what a coincidence, our little tours met. I took a picture of Roger as he was attempting to fall into one of the natural hotsprings ![]() as cool as I can be I quite nicely asked if he was the "Roger Mears" of racing fame and he confirmed this. introduced us to Carol and we chatted for a bit. he was really a great guy to talk to. very friendly and genuinely interested in our ride and the fact we had ridden across the states to get there. that was a neat little surprise. said our goodbyes to Angel and blazed a trail back out to the main road. an enother excellent day in Baja!

Meeting Roger Mears and family in Baja is way cool. He is a legend of the off-road races down there. Indy, NASCAR, BAJA, he has done it all.
Forgive my ignorance, but I have a question. Who is Coco? of Coco's Corners. I must have missed something cuz I never heard of him. Keep the reports coming, can't wait for my turn to ride the route.
