After chilling in LA for a few days, and doing some test photo's for a movie poster I was ready to move again.
This isn't one of them, but same subject, my friend Megan.

While riding the GS "home" (at my life long friend who's house on the beach is more like Base Camp One for me on the west coast, Thanks Emil, sorry bout the black eye...!) I remembered the good times I had on this bike...
So when packing to set out again on my journey I looked at the two bikes....
What the hell. I should just quit being an asshole about the GS, after all it is a hell of a nice bike and I worked hard to pay for it.
I packed up and headed north towards Sacramento.
On the GS.

It was nice to see some green earth before me.

Camping at an expensive campground I had all to myself... I was reminded of the costs of campgrounds in Cali... with lots of trails closed due to the rain I knew it would be hard(er) to find somewhere free to camp.

I had some company...

After a night camping I made it to Sac...

then going for a ride on the coast with a fellow ADV FF...

After a nice time on the coast I felt bored riding the GS... I head back to Sac , and then things got weird.

I think someone slipped me a Rufy... long story short I ended up here.

And then in a blur I straight up traded my GS for a XR650R!
Goodbye Yellow Bitch, hello Ms. Honda!
3 days of wrenching later I set out on the new beast, the Big Red Pig or BRP.

So here she is in all her glory!

Not concerning myself with the annoying formalities I left the old plates on.

Didn't I do this last year, swap bikes mid-ride? Shit.

Having what seems to be a strong running, but very untested bike, a new set off 606's, camping gear, food, scotch, a how to speak Spanish and a Hunter S. Thompson book I'm going back to Baja.
This time on a bike more appropriate for me to really WANDER and get really off the beaten path. Oh, yeah I'm also bringing a much different attitude and a wee bit more language skills to see what happens.
Riding my GS in the NorCal wine country while was nice, but it felt like masturbating. Does the job , but not really what I need.
I want the real deal, a real adventure, some challenges, a chance to open my eye's to Baja and it's people. Or some very alone time in the desert. Or a kick in the ass on a XR650R in Baja!

I left Sac this morning, and did the first day shakedown run on the BRP, a nice 400 mile slab ride. She only lost two bolts and I finally got the feel for the kick start...

I don't have my laptop, and if things go as planned I will be off the grid for a while... a week, two, three? who knows.
I will try to update sometime soon, this should be good... I'm excited, and it's been a while since I've been excited...

Wish me luck, I might need it!

In everything, it's all about having the right tool for the job. And for you it's about pushing the envelope. I'm hanging on, in for the ride.

Holy shit! You were talking about getting a dirt bike when you were here but I didn't think you'd trade your GS for an XRR. You certainly follow (make?) your own path.

Have fun in Baja and hit me up on the way back and we'll take the XR's out to the desert.

Good luck and safe travels... Really a piece Of pig Honda xr650r? A friend did same thing to go to baja last year. Be sure to check that oil level. Don't under or over fill. Guess they are a bit bitchy about it.

He's selling it now to buy a KTM I believe. To each their own... From reading it seems you'd be happiest on a vstrom 650 with knobbies and bags or a newer version of the Tiger. But what WTF do I know. I love my F8GS... Best bike I've owned.

Good point. Finn, if you have time get and install the Baja Designs oil site tube. That way you can easily and quickly check the oil level. Mas importante!!

Looks like your going over the border right now..

Get some extra batteries for your spot 2 if your going to leave it in tracking mode all the time.. The lithium batteries are hard to find in Baja...

I am sure you know about the recall on the spot 2, they have not shipped out replacement units yet so don't bother shipping yours back..

cant wait to see the pics.
