Wicked Smokin' Hole Rallye - 5/09 - We don't need no stinkin keys!

That was a fantastic weekend of riding, eating, drinking, hanging out, more eating, and - oh yeah looking for bike keys!

Rallye Host and Ride Leaders:
To begin, Dave and his ride leaders (Rob and Bob) are top notch guys. They went out of their way to create interesting rides for the variety of riders. Dave truly thinks of everything a rider could need before, during and after a ride including, water, Red Bull, plenty of beer and some tasty grub. What always impresses me about Dave is that he is always thinking about how to make the Smokin Hole Ride better the next year. When I was packing up my bike on Sunday, he was telling me what he was thinking about doing with the routes next year.
Thanks a ton Dave, Rob and Bob!

The Rides and Sites:
I had a blast on the road and in the dirt. Rob and Bob kept us moving at a good pace and we covered about 200 miles on and off- road. Some of the sites we visited on our ride included Hickory Run Boulder Field, Francis Walter Dam, an amazing water fall, the Jugs (I think that was their name), Ricketts Glenn, and a variety of crystal clear Pocono lakes with some posh houses. The railroad dirt road was a blast. Hats off to the V Strom guys/girls and passengers for keeping the shiny side up.

Food and Drink:
The food in at the rallye in Germantown was fantastic and just kept coming. Whether it was bacon, eggs, hashbrowns, bagels and coffee for breakfast or tortilla soup, barbequed ribs and chicken, fresh salad, hamburgers and beer for dinner, the food and hospitality of the Germantown crew never stopped.

Riders:
[/SIZE]Great bunch of guys and girls who really wanted to ride and hangout! The hardcore dirt riders and the road/dirt riders mixed well and shared some great stories. I have been to some other rallyes where there is a clear division of riders. This was not the case and it seemed that everyone was there to ride whatever they brought and eat. Whether it the Husky guys, the KTM crew, the Kawasaki thumpers, the VStrom cruisers, the Honda XR dudes or the Suzuki rippers, it didn't matter what you rode as long as you left camp on two wheels.

Bike Keys:
um.... yeah... on a minor note... I kinda misplaced my keys for several hours and I was amazed at how many people helped me look for them digging their flashlights out and searching around the bikes. Then when I got back to camp the next morning a few guys had already checked around in the daylight. After all that, a few guys helped me lift my bike (with the wheel locked) in to my truck.

I can't thank people enough for all of their help and ribbing! I promise to bring a case of microbrew from the Philly area next year for the crew who helped me. I owe Sallydog (who probably got the biggest laugh out of everything) a really nice 6 pack for finding the keys up the road on the street.

Thanks again for a great rallye - sign me up for next year!

Jeff (mrxinpa) asked me to share this video. I shot it in portrait mode with my camera, so you'll have to turn your head sideways to get the full effect.

And just for reference, he saved it from falling (with a little help) and we walked it up the last few feet. Lots of good riding over near Eckley.

Thanks for a great time

Thanks Dave and Rob for all you did. Its obvious a lot of planning and work goes into a rally like The Smokin Hole. Great rides, great food, great group of folks and great weather (how did you manage that). Look forward to next year.

Go to the Ask Baldy, Blame MaddBrit forum and follow Shoganai's instructions for embedding video clips. Simple as that.

Jeff - yellow F650GS - Fauster (damn... a lot of Jeffs at one rally!)
