Double Xr 250 rebuild....
Hi folks
I have two extremely beaten up old xr250 s of indiscriminate age and origin... They have been ridden on the beach ( and one into the sea) ![]() ![]() I have now stripped one down completely and starting a rebuild that could go on for a while... Both the bikes have engine number beginning with MD 17 E and the one I am currently rebuilding has the Baja type headlights and tank etc. I am looking for a source of spares for the engines ( will also need new plastics and would like to put long range tanks and new seats' new chains, new sprockets, new pegs, new kick starts, new brake leavers, new etc etc... ) I am in Kenya which makes things a bit more difficult and have never really tackled a bike engine before only boats and Toyota land cruiser engines... I don't mind importing parts from US or UK and would really love some advice and pointers Quite happy to start a thread if any of you would like to follow this debacle...! Cheers! Ed |

I don't have any pointers except to observe that you must have some quality free time on your hands. Please start a thread, and let us know here that you are starting the thread. I'd like to follow.

![]() Here's a pic of them last week... The one on the left is now in many pieces... I do get good chunks of free time.... Ideally I would like to order all the parts for both in one go so that when I do have the time I won't have to waste it waiting on spares.... Will get started on a new thread ASAP and will post the link... Thanks Ed |

Thanks, there's allready a couple of Freeride threads on this forum.
The Europeans got them last year, we're getting them in dribs and drabs this year and I think you guys are getting them next year. I've had my deposit down for a couple of months, still waiting. |

Hey all, recently picked up a 1992 XR250R with a nice shiny license plate, and am fairly happy with the bike for the price. Had a couple questions on her, wondered if anyone had some ideas.
1.) Not getting the torque I expected from the wee beastie. It is a bit hard to get to start kickstarting, but not terrible. I assume check valve clearance and check the plug are good starts? One of the exhaust headers has a dent in it that takes away approx 1/3 of the flow area (before the 2 come together). That seems like a pretty big deal to me, wondering if anyone has any idea of how much that would contribute to lack of low-end torque. If it's huge, I'll try to find a used header on flea bay or the like for cheap, if not, I'll try to concentrate more on the engine. 2.) What shop manual do you guys think is best for the XR (pre-1996) and do you have a link to pick one up? 3.) Do you guys know where to pick up braided lines for just the front brake? The brakes are very un-awe inspiring. A bleed would likely help, but I figure braided lines at the same time couldn't hurt, if there was a place to get just the front for a decent price. The bike was picked up for a budget price, so trying not to throw too much money at it. 4.) Are there any cheap/free mods for a little extra power? I'm not looking to compromise reliability, but something like a little extra air (especially at 3,500 ft) probably couldn't hurt too much. Thanks in advance, looking forward to some good riding on the bike. |

The pre-1996 XR250R's are rock solid. You're lucky to have one! These bikes love to have the airbox opened up a bit, and they LOVEEE to be bored out to a large displacement.

The 1996-2004, like mine, need work like I said before but they are outstanding once they're all set up right. Hard to beat a proper XR250R or XR400R for a dual-sport actually!

I wish it would be a DS , but in the state I currently reside , it might be tough.

That's crap, just like California. I'm lucky mine was grandfathered in. I want to know why they must not allow dual-sport conversions.
