Hi. What sort of trouble are you having? Can you not get all the marks aligned to where they should be? Does the bike run as it sits? Is the cam chain new?
The timing is not adjustable and is pretty easy to set...You have to have the piston at top dead center when you are doing this and the chain tensioner must be held back out of the way. It's hard to explain it, look to see if you can download a manual online for another XR/XL (like a XR600, XL250, etc...) the timing procedure for those bikes should be very similar if not the same.

what about the valve clearance when i took it apart there was a lot of clearance and when i put it back together the guy that helped me thought it should only have 3thousants clearance
