Got mine a year ago this weekend. I had been casually looking at sport tourers and happened to go look at this one in New Hampshire because it was a good price, and I had nothing else to do that night. Sat on it, started it up, he offered to let me take it around the block (I rode there), came back and wrote him a check and told I'm be back the next morning with the truck. 1 year, 23,000 miles, 32 states, and 3 sets of tires later and I can say with certainty that I will own this bike the rest of my life.

Been browsing enough lately, figured I should join, here she is. The maiden camping trip is next weekend to a state park to commute to the two days of AMA superbike races at Road America here in Wisconsin.

I bought her last July and have been using it to commute as much as I can. Fairings aren't pristine but mechanically we're good.

Very nice!! I'm a sucker for 5th gens. I grew up in NE Wisconsin in Crivitz and I hope to retire someday around Madison. I've heard the west and central areas of the state have some good riding.

Has anyone changed the rear footpegs to something rubberized? My girl complains that they vibrate way too much back there so I'm looking for something to replace them with that don't look like bricks back there but do bring things down a notch.

That's what I'm talkin' about right there! Got my '98 one year ago under even less-planned circumstances -- saw it on the "lemon lot" while on a Sunday morning jog. Looked pristine. Called the guy out of curiosity & wrote a check that afternoon (all the other lookie-loo's had to wait for the banks to open the next day!). Not an impulse buy; l happened to have a little extra stash for such an opportunity and it paid off.
I, too, will keep it for a long, long time.....

I swear you bahstids are going to cost me money. I'm sticking with the GS for any distance, but if I keep seeing these pics of '98-'01s, there's going to be trouble.

It's obvious why you're so conflicted, angst filled, and confused. You're using the wrong tool for the job and your subconscious knows it.
The VFR is the perfect distance machine.
There ain't gonna be no trouble man.

Just rolled over 1000 miles on my watch (odo is now 4850). Also geared her up for my first multiple day moto-overnight trip. Boulder -> LA leaving friday at dawn... so stoked.
