I am not sure if anything is off limits up there. There are some active plants and compressor stations but I didn't see any rigs in the area on my two trips to the top. Usually the only thing off limits is an actual plant site or rig location. Old leases typically don't have anything in the way of security. On the way out one time we did hear some alarms coming from the big operation a few miles in from 734 so we booked it out of there.

There is a gate at the top of the mountain where the communications tower is. I suspect that the forestry guys would get their panties twisted if you rode all the way to the lookout. I always stopped at the gate, had a break and went home. One of these days I'll leave myself enough time (and remember to bring shoes) to hike to the lookout. It is active in the fire season so there may or may not be a crazy loner watching you approach....no offense to crazy loners intended.

Thanks

I would have too, if I heard alarms, especially if it was for a gas release.

It looks to be a good hike, for an office type......

I guess as long as they weren't watching you through a scope, while they BBQ'ed marmots.

The ADSMC group has done a few rides up there over the past years. The trail past the gate is the highlight of the route. Talked to the forestry custodian several times and she confirmed the gate was to keep cars from venturing further due to the road conditions. They had no issue with us going up all the way (unlike with Mockingbird Hill which is now off limits to all vehicle traffic). I posted a track on gpsxchange earlier:

But the GPS says you can't get there from here.recalculating.recalculating...
Next time to the top.

What time of year does the snow usually fly up there? I think I'd like to make the summit one of these days

Mid-July is usually safe. Here's a couple of shots of the section between the gate and the lookout taken from this year's ride:

Sunday Ride to Limestone Mountain

Anyone up for a ride to Limestone? This will be my third attempt to see the view after being dashed by bad directions and bad weather. I figure third time is the charm.

I'll be leaving Tim's, Cochrane, at 10:00 AM Sunday. Weather forecast looks good! Round trip from Tim's should be around 280 km so bring extra gas if you feel the need.

I too have been stymied twice this year trying to make it to Limestone Lookout. First trip was a GPS & fuel issues. The second trip I stopped at the gate, unsure of the etiquette.

Would like to join you on Sunday, but work comes first.

Should be good for Sunday. Third time is a charm!! We do get closer to that nice view each time we go!!

I'll bring a small jerry can but would like to fill up in mountain aire lodge for the comfort of knowing I'll have enough gas to travel more miles than anticipated. Should have bought the 4.7 gallon tank, or the big acerbis.

Let us know how the ride was today.

I was going to join you guys today but at the last minute I pulled the pin because I needed to do one thing today before I would have had the chance to get back.

I might be going out tomorrow somewhere. Maybe a tour of Mclean, even though I just did it in my truck on Saturday.

Well, I tried...got to Cochrane about 45 minutes late, then tried to catch up; I thought I might meet you guys on the way back. But I ran out of time right after turning onto the road to Limestone off of 734 - I guess you guys were still going up and back. Looks like a great ride up there, I'll try again another time.

We Ian and I decided to ride to just below the cabin and had some struggles getting up one hill. The big bikes stayed behind so they could laugh at us. So we were there for a while that is probably why we didn't see you on the way back,.

Should we decide in the morning?

Thinking to start off with Elbow Falls, then up to the top of Quirk Ridge, over to Fisher East, take the cutline to Fisher West, and maybe back on the 762.

I'll be up at 8 and check the forum. Bike's pretty much ready to roll. Earliest leave would be 10AM for me, but I'm flexible. As long as I get back before it gets cold.

OK, you'll be my dual sport Sensei. I'm just a low IQ dirt bike guy so you'll have to be gentle. I'll check here in the AM. We'll see how it goes.

Sorry,

Running a bit late.

Thinking of leaving Calgary around noon when it has warmed up a bit. I'm coming from the north but would like to avoid the #1 so will probably take a few back roads down to #8 and out to bragg that way.

Edit: It's actually looking pretty dark to the west. Not sure how to play this one.
