Wicked I'm back - after an almost three-year hiatus!

Now that I'm back, I wouldn't mind trying to hook up with a few fellow inmates for the odd ride and / or social event. Been riding dirt since 1970 or so (grew up around Waiparous and knew it well!); Class 6 since 1988 (but used very little!) Not overly mechanically inclined, but enough knowledge to be dangerous. Old enough (46) and have kids so I know I don't have anything to prove... just enjoy the ride, the scenery, the social side and get home safe to my family!

Full disclosure:

1. I am crazy busy with work and kids so getting out might be a last minute event (day before if lucky). I have a weird schedule: working until 10 am week days; pick up kids at 1230 pm and play dad for afternoon till supper. So some evenings and weekends could be fair game for riding. I would love to do a full weekend, overnight once this year, God (wife) willing! (Actually bought the bike with the delusion of riding the Continental Divide to Mexico, backtrack to Utah, head west on the TAT to OR, and back home - 3 to 4 weeks - but having kids has caused me to move this onto the "Bucket List" and off of the "this summer 2009" list!!) Right about now, Andy will be laughing at this one...!

2. A ride might be for short periods of time from an hour or two to a half day.

3. I live in Tuscany NW so will favour rides N & W of here as it is easier access to back roads for me (I despise paved highways but understand short passage may be a necessary evil - that means you Trans-Canada - and am basically scared of big city riding specifically - Damn boneheaded drivers and traffic!) I will ride around the outside of the city, but not in it. I think I actually am allergic to bald ass prairie - particularly any points east of the Fearfoot Trail (living in Moose Jaw for a year did it to me) - causes the heebie-jeebies - so I will avoid eastern destinations at all costs.

4. I am not a hooligan on the road (bike is geared lower for the dirt) and won't ride like a disrespectful A-hole; in fact, I don't like it when other riders behave like jerks and give us a bad name (but hey, I hate cage drivers and cyclists when they demonstrate they got their licenses out of a Cracker Jack box, so I am an equal opportunity judge of poor behaviour! )

5. I will take care off-road and abide by the laws (no poaching riding terrain not allowable by law, close gates if I open them);

6. I am temporarily insane during this time of year with all the hockey finals on TV. Especially during Stanley Cup playoffs where more nights than not, find myself on the couch with micro-brews, rye or lately, Captain Morgan's Spiced rum & diet coke. (Damned playoffs should be over by the end of April!)

7. I didn't insure my dirt bikes as I have no means to transport them to the dirt. If some of you live nearby and have said means, and after reading this missive, still want to try riding with me, and you meet my criteria, and I can find time (IE: my wife thinks it's OK), I would consider insuring the KDX for the $100 it will cost me for the year. Actually, if I had a legit excuse, (transport and riding partners), I would love to get back out in the dirt with her... it has been far too long!

8. Timmies over Starbucks any day! But I will take up residence in their establishment due to comfy chairs and free Wi-Fi!

Now that I have probably alienated some/half/most of you, I look forward to someday meeting the small percentage that remain: those who appreciate scenic rides (preferably in good weather), good micro-brews / liquor, and a good laugh!

I will follow this forum a little more closely now I am up and running. Time to sit back with the good Cap'n and wait for all the replies, rebuttals (and stones?) to come my way... whatever, we all like to ride and it's all in the name of fun! At least I hope I made you laugh!

Cheers,

Dean

Welcome back Dean! I will have the Husky back in piece soon (tomorrow)... looking forward to getting out on a ride with you in Waiparous.

Maybe even a rip on the KDXs...? I have trailer with room for your bike.

Cheers,
Andy

Sounds good Andy - thanks for the offer! Hmmm, guess I better get insurance for the 200!

I see you are using a trials tire. I had one on my 300 EXC and loved it. Not great if you are the type to like to spin up the rear every chance you get but it was GREAT for tough single track and getting started half way up a hill.

A group of us saw a couple of smaller dual sports on the south end of Spray lakes road just after starting toward Canmore, the lead rider was sporting a Go Pro on his helmet. It was the best condition I have ever seen that road in, no dust at all and no deep gravel either. Made for a nice run. We passed a BMW GS on 68 west of Powderface, that looked a bit uncomfortable on the gravel, but at least he was out there.

I was trying out my new SPOT.

I love the trials tire. I put a Tubliss setup on the bike and have been running about 6 lbs in the rear and it really hooks up. And with the Rekluse this little bike goes anywhere.

I'm looking forward to a big bike ride though. Maybe Limestone mountain next weekend?

Yesterday

Redcat, it ws probably a buddy and me (he rides a black Weestrom and I am on a white 990). We did the circle from Calgary west on 1A to 1X to Hwy 40, then east on 68 and south on Powderface (Lycan1, we saw the lone guy on the BMW near the north end of Powderface, so missed your group by a bit). Saw four guys on dual sports on the southern part of Powderface, two BMW's and 2 KTM's. Continued east on 66, then south on MacLean Creek and then worked our way south and east to Turner Valley, where we saw a couple of guys (BMW"s? Redcat?). We stopped at the fair in Turner Valley for a bit, then a burger and a milkshake at Marv's in Black Diamond before winding north to home. Conditions were pretty good, apart from a couple of muddy spots on Powderface. Even had a bit of dust from time to time on south facing exposures.

No riding today. David

We stopped at the Sibald view point and saw two bikes hitting Powderface just before we headed out toward 40 (on 68), so that was probably you two. From the distance it looked like 1 black and 1 white bike. It was a cool up on Spray Lakes road, but not uncomfortable.

Red Cat rides a S-10 by the way.

Rain, rain go away...

Going to brave it and get trucked out to Waiparous, leaving at 1030. Destination is gravel pit. Taking the 640 and Chris has his WRX(?) 250. Might try riding to 4 corners depending on conditions. Hope forecast is wrong - else at least I get to see Waiparous for the first time in 3 years. Heard there was a big clearcut done around the gravel pit?

Nice photo Wes.

Wet Waiparous!

Wow! Great to get out today, even under monsoon conditions!

I have never seen the 940 so wet and greasy - we got sideways in the truck a few times and had to switch into 4-low. Glad we didn't tap out and head home; we had a blast.

Explored the clearcut around the gravel pit, rode the guide camp road to 4 corners and investigated a bunch or roads near the river before riding the 940 back to the truck. The rain was minimal for the 3 hours of riding. We got changed and loaded then almost on cue, the skies opened up as we left - cleaned the bikes off a bit.

After that taste, I think I will be insuring the 200!! (Andy take note!)

If Chris forwards some pics, I will post.

Talking Fatallybitten!

Pretty sure that was it! Nice to link up to the gravel in there and do some neat loops. I can leave my house in SW Calgary and do a 3 hour rip in there doing lots of combination back roads to Longview and back and have a great ride doing it. Usually try to stop in Turner Valley at Motorad and support their food stand when its not raining.
