It's a gravel road, or was. Rough in spots, but no issues with traction.

FTR to Sparwood?

Anyone have any ideas on what this road(s) is like? Is it V-Strom friendly?

That route looks to me like the North Fork Pass trail... not really what I'd want to try and take a V-Strom across, but it's "doable" with a strong rider. If you try it with a V-Strom, make sure you have a really strong skid plate in place, would be easy to damage expensive bits with the rocks on it.

Stock tires. Smoothies. Don't get hung up on tires. Smoothies will go 99% of all places a VStrom will want to go. Just stay away from deep mud and sand.

Yup! North Fork.

Personally I wouldn't want to take a V-strom across that even if I, or the bike could do it.

There are a group of fairly steep rock ledges near the start of the pass that, if failed in a attempt, could turn out pretty ugly for both rider and bike. Having a ~550? lb bike fall on you will hurt... a lot.

If you are inclined to do so, make sure you and your buddies are very capable riders and spot each other so a small mistake doesn't turn into a big injury.

Other than the rock shelve and the baby head hill that follows on the way down, the pass itself isn't very difficult. Few stream crossings but they aren't normally that deep and smooth/firm bottomed.

Can't remember if this pass has any, but sometimes the streams in this area have VERY slippery rocks. Like, uncommonly slippery. If they look brown at all, proceed with caution. You could have three good ones, then the next puts you in the drink. Typically these only start on the WEST side of the pass.

Lastly, know your directions for the west side. It can become a bit confusing and there is some mine work going on which I think conflicts with what Google shows. East side has a few turns, but a GPS will clearly show the path.

Personally I'd recommend Race Horse before North Fork. Race Horse is also better for views.

Thanks for the replies. I was just playing around on Google maps and was wondering. Neither the bike or I (especially me) would be capable of this. Maybe someday!

I looked at google just as you have. That pass (North foork) looks convenient but is dificult. Got limk to elkfordtrails.com to see a pdf of quad trails. There are 4 passes. They decrease in difficulty as you go south. From hardest to easiest north fork, race horse, deadmans, philips.

Of course I have not riden any of them yet.

Yes, very good advice - I had a security escort out of the active open-pit mine the first time I ventured across North Fork. That was awkward.

There are still some pretty sketchy aspects on the west side of Racehorse (lots of baby heads). I think for a V-Strom, Deadmans Pass (just south of Racehorse) is very doable and would be a lot of fun (although not at all scenic) with just the right amount of challenge.

Can anyone tell me if North Fork pass and Racehorse pass are open and accessible now via Dutch Creek road and/or "Allison Road"? I'm planning on being in the Crowsnest area next Tuesday and Wednesday, and would like to check out these areas. Riding a DR650, very lightly loaded with only a day pack, and Kenda Trackmaster II tires.

Any other "must do" trails in the area?

Yes to all the ?.
this was Canada long weekend. Friend rode across a couple days later.
Atlas road is now a quad trail. Bridges all removed except the damaged one from heavy equipment. Nice new quad bridge at about marker post 100, passable for quads and bikes. SxS + jeeps now cross the creek by going under the bridge. Way to sketchy to cross under in full size 4x4. North fork can / will be very challenging by yourself with new wash out on trail.
No maps or google earth is accurate around mine site as there are lots of intersections. Can not see trail through the trees on google earth. Lots of round rock on trails on the west side of passes.

Dutch is a fun area to explore. Many of the quad trails are easy so just bring a GPS with spare batteries and explore.

Once in Elkford, stop at the ... well I don't know where it is. But there is a restaurant in a building close to the highway. It has amazing food. You'd never think it would.

Believe this is the building: https://maps.google.ca/maps?q=50.024...t=h&gl=ca&z=18

You can also explore the strip mine north of Blairmore. Just be careful here. Easy riding, but some steep drop offs and open holes / ledges in the trees and off trail. I'd poke around this one with extreme caution as a mistake is easy if bombing off trail.

Thanks for the replies. I'll definitely go for Racehorse then, will likely check out North Fork too, with the understanding that I may have to turn around at some point. I do have a .gpx track from someone that rode it last year ish, with supposedly the "correct" way to avoid the mine property on the west slope. Don't remember where I downloaded it from though. I also saw some pictures last year of a couple of KLR's tackling the "steps" on the east ascent, but to be honest it didn't look like anything to worry about with an unloaded DR, knobby tires, and moderate trail riding experience, as long as it isn't wet. New washout you say? Have you seen it, or just heard of it?

I hate to say it, but a V-strom can't be compared to a KLR....

A DR would do it better than a KLR. I believe they have a bit more clearance and better suspension. It's mostly about commitment.
