Did you ever get your suspension revalved?
Ride Concepts in Chestermere did a rebuild on my rear shock in December. I didn't feel the need for any changes to my set up just yet. I am still trying to decide whether to go tall on my 990 suspension, or get a 690 and do the Rally Raid set up, and until I ride a 690 I won't worry about it too much. I am trying to decide which bike will make a better South america tour bike. Lightness and simplicity of maintenance are important, but also something that can be enjoyable for such a long trip as well. I have lots of time to get organized and decide. KTM might come up with something perfect in the meantime.

Lol! Don't hold your breath. Hahahaha! Rumours are now that ktm owns husky they might build an adventure bike with the 690 motor to expand sales on the husky side of things. Which be awesome, but at this point it's only rumours.

I'll be there as well with a couple other inmates around 5 till whenever. Been AWOL on here since selling the 950SE and getting a jeep - now jeep is sold and I'm starting to itch for another DS, smaller this time (for my limited off road skills) SE probably wasn't best choice for first dirt bike...but was still the most fn bike I've ever had 😜

but which one? 690, 500... 350? Gotta go have a look!

South America, wow. Personally if I was doing that ride it would be on an XRL 650 or a DR 650. Simplicity and reliability. Maybe a KLR. Another option would be the DRZ 400 but not as comfortable and can't carry all your gear. KTMs are high powered , ready to race bikes and that's a huge trip. You may want to go Japanese. We want pics, please!

It is very early in the planning stages, but I am determined. When I go it will be a long trip, so I am trying to learn Spanish. When I go there will be an ongoing report, and I'm usually good for a picture or two.

If you were riding a 990 down in south America I might agree. They are a bit more finicky and more difficult to work on definitely. But the 690 is totally fine. Numerous people are using it for RTW trips without any issue. Service intervals are nice and long (7500-10000km). You can check the valves in about an hour and the LC4 motor in both carbed and fuel injected forms were used in the Dakar WITHOUT the motors being replace at stop points as they are now with the 450cc motors (all the manufactures do that not just KTM).

Not saying the 690 doesn't have it's small issues, but what bike doesn't? KLR doo-hickey? Burned A TON of oil? Kinda get where I'm going? A 690 is just as dependable as any old school japanese thumber in my opinion. And still will make real power when the odometer hits 30-50km's unlike a KLR which will basically sputter. Not try to hate on the KLR, just a fact. It's a 25 year old design after all...

I put 70,000km over 3 years on my 640 in SA. It wasn't trouble free. Bad fuel took out a piston. The clutch slave started to leak. On a trip like that your bike gets beat up. It's a fact. I met 2 guys with KLRs that needed new pistons due to bad gas, a few BMW650s that needed either fuel pumps or water pumps. I met a guy with an R100 that was constantly wrenching. (Nothing was broken, he just wrenched a lot.) No matter what bike you choose, something will go wrong. If you find DR650s comfy, I'd recommend one with SM wheels and a big gas tank. They're a common bike in South America. So are the 650 V-strom; if you want a bike with more of a street platform.
I met a few people riding 950ADVs. They were the only ones that never had any problems. (One of the reasons that I have a 990, now)

I've got lots more to add, if you're interested.

I'm definitely interested. We will have to hook up for a ride come spring and you can tell me your experiences down there. My 990 has been pretty good considering how many kilometers I have thrashed it (72,000+). I did just put a new clutch slave on it, but the old one was still working fine. I just liked the idea of the Oberon with the bigger piston (lighter action) and multiple "O" rings instead of 1 in the stocker.

I have some studded tires for my 450. I'll be installing them and heading out to the ghost on my next days off. If you've got a bike for that type of use, feel free to join! No need to wait until spring.

Please report on the conditions you find there. I'm planning on getting out to the South Ghost on Jan 19th with my studded GasGas. Have heard it's a bit of a struggle right now with the snow accumulation there.

Calgary Bike Show!

Big social event for me but did check a lot of bikes. Only 3 got me excited. The new 1000 VStrom is very nice. 2 models at $12,000. and $13,000. for the full meal deal. 4 colors. Black, red, white and desert(Ugly). Red is the nicest. The new 1190 KTM Adventure. Big wow factor but pricey at $19,000. 2 models. The Standard, 2 colors and the R Model, 1 color. Both with tubeless tires believe it or not. Yes a 21 inch tubeless. The new 2014 Yamaha S10 is going to be in my garage this spring. Asking price is $17,400. at the show. 2 Models. 1 basic and one fully loaded with ESA, Cruise etc for that price. Should do better when I buy. Anyone want a 2012 S10 with 46,000kms with all the bells and whistles including the 1st valve adjust done. $10,500.

Didn't get to make it into the show this year as I'm in the field working... But I bought a bike at show prices anyway via phone, lol! 2013 CRF450X in a crate waiting for pick up when I get home. Let the Baja bike build begin, ;)
