532, FTR, Lyon's Creek rd

Just got back from a weekend down south. Took 532 to FTR. No issues. Went north of the junction to check progress on the bridge repairs. We were able to cross on the temporary repair. There was no sign of construction crew. The sign said road would be closed from Sept 2 to end of Oct. But the barricade was pulled to the side. Further south, the realignment project (south of Maycroft junction) was signed as "road closed" but again, no crews and no sign of any work being done. The barricades were up but only covering half of the road.
The FTR corridor was fairly full of campers and hikers so we were not the only ones ignoring signs.

The Lyons Creek Road, south of Coleman, was in pretty good shape. Again, there was a road closed/use at own disk sign with lots of tracks around it. About 20 km in, the bridge is out. There is a fording crossing beside the bridge. Great for ATVs and 4x4's but due to grapefruit sized, smooth rocks in the bottom, not great for VStroms. With one person on each side, we were able to get across. Rest of the road was great.

All in all, a great weekend.

A friend and I just did the Lyons Creek Road 2 weeks ago. Took my V2 Strom through with no problems other than it being a little slippery.

Watch for the BMW GSChallenge riders in and around Calgary this weekend! We had fun watching them in Balfour. I headed south and am using KTM 990 and Redverz tent for what they are both designed to do. Currently in a campsite in Nevada snuggled up to the KTM after getting awesome service by the crew at Carl's Cycles in Boise

Met!

The Theison boys yesterday. Dad and 2 sons all on KTM 990s. Rocked all the way to Motorad for a bite. Very cool bunch. Getting to be a lot of Adventure bike types around.

Major suckage alert

Henry and I rode Black Diamond - 22 south - 532 west - 40 south - Crowsnest- Lundbreck - Skyline north and 22 north.

Today is the last day for 40. It is closed for about a year, 20 km north of Crowsnest. They are running it straight through and permanently cutting off about 20 km of the best part of the ride . That part is apparently going to become a private road with no access.

532 isn't in great shape with sizable parts with no gravel and Skyline is wrecked, long stretches of deep rutted mud with standing water.

Still fun but the best part of the trip was lunch in the Cinnamon Bear. That place gets two thumbs up for everything from the hot, thick coffee, to the meals and desserts and the hot, thick staff

Major suckage alert ends.

Actually!

940 will only be closed for a month(not a year) south of( The Gap) Maycroft Rd. The Earl of Leisure and I were out there yesterday. 532 is wide open too. Couple of other buddies did the 940 past the Closed sign last week and said there was no reason for it being posted. They rode all the way to Coleman.

Cool!

I'd be all over that with someone else's bike. Do they get to keep the supplied riding gear and helmet?

Any suggested day rides - what say you?

I want to maximize the remaining days till the weather totally sucks. I work till about 10 am most mornings, then have occasional days where I can get on the bike for day trips. Some days till dusk, most till 3-6 pm. Any suggestions about routes? I live in NW (Tuscany) so will be starting/ending there.

One day I would love to head towards Radium, then take Settlers Road, not sure how close it ends near Fernie, and back up 940, but sounds like portions of 940 may be closed and I'm not a poacher... How would one link this up back to Calgary and how long would this take? Could it be done in a long day?

I want to learn some more routes / loops... Please share your suggestions. Thanks!

That is way better news than the foreman of the crew gave me. They had definitely started clearing and grubbing when we went through.

I need to start carrying a jerry can. The 990 is thirsty enough that it was a bad minute while I calculated whether I would make it back to Longview if the road was truly shut.

532 has enough ungraveled portions that anyone (me, for instance) running K60s have an . . . interesting . . . time at speed.

Also, forgot to post this earlier. We had a bad moment on Skyline when we came around a corner and met a 627 face to face. Company called NLSS doesn't seem to believe in pilot trucks
