hope that's not a dumb question. But for safety reasons and to lessen carrying flammable items (like heet or excess alcohol) on the bike, will normal petrol work as well?

Regular isopropyl will work, however it burns dirty. The Methanol (Yellow Heet) burns perfectly clean. Coleman White gas, I tried that in my experiments as well, it burns big, fast, and dirty. All I can recommend is the Methanol alcohol, which is available from other sources, I just say Yellow bottle Heet because it's the most common way to find it.

Dangerous, burns too fast and hot, will be a fireball when you light it, especially if you wait more than a few seconds after pouring, and it will burn very dirty and make a lot of smoke.

You can also use "Air Brake Antifreeze for Semis". You can buy it in a larger quantities and might be available in areas where Heet can not be found in the summer or truck stops. Put some food coloring in so you know it's not Water.
