Recently a number of problems happened with the plastic tank cover/ sidepanel, here in Holland.
The plastic knob on the inside of the tank-front, is not a verry sturdy fixture
When on the highway this knob loses grip, the sidepanel wil rip-off and ruin the aluminum tank-side (near your knee)
As I bought the anti-theft tank-cover mountingscrew set from Wunderlich (the ones with the triangular-screwdriver-hole) i have the original BMW mountingscrews spare.
I've did some work on the fixingplates and now use these plates in combination with the screw, to keep the tank sidepanel fixed on the bike.
Now I definatly know it won't come off anymore

I had the same damm thing happen to me in Florida. I scratched the side panel and bent the aluminum. It was probably my fault as I didn't secure the panel properly or i did it to quickly without checking it. I hope it won't happen again as i really thought the panel was going to fly off the bike at 140kmph

Yeah... I know... too much of a bike to be the first. I know my limits -- I'm being more careful than I think I need to be.

I've read too many books on how to ride bikes. Took the MSF class and got my endorsement. Got the bike. That being said, I've learned that I am mortal and I'm not being a hero. So far (~200mi), so good!

Having fun so far, and I'm more than happy with it!

Cleveland Rocks!

So does your new bike.

Congratulations George.

New Paint!

I finally got around to repainting my ride over the last two weeks. I went with an Audi/VW deep metallic blue in a base coat/clear coat application I used a cheap $35 HVLP spray gun and my friend's garage as a paint booth. My local auto body shop was very helpful in advising me about the prep work, including how to repair some scratches in my topcase that were the result of my 1150's total loss collision.

Here's a before shot with the repair and most of the prep work completed on the primered top case:

What it looks like now. The black textured areas are Herculiner, bought at my local auto parts store:

Sparkle Black. That's the same thing my wife said when she saw it! I don't really care for the shiny look of the Herculiner but the body shop guy believes it will dull with time. I hope so!

I must admit I prefer the original silver on the tank to that Herculiner.. looks too blobby for my taste.. However,, I respect your individuality and God-Given Right to "Boldly go where no mans has gone before"

The pics really don't do the texture justice. It's actually quite uniform. You should have seen my first attempt with the Herculiner. Now that was blobby! It was a real PITA to take off too. I had to paint it repeatedly with straight Xylene just to soften it enough to penetrate it with a chisel!
