Should I????

At the current time my boss and I do not see eye to eye (I am a teacher and believe that children are more than just a test score) and I am in danger of losing my job. My wife says that I should take this opportunity to do a Round the World trip for two years or maybe just tour Europe for a year. I have seen all the movies (Long Way Round, Mondo Enduro, etc.) and have always envied people that had the opportunity to do this. Now I have this opportunity and just can't believe it! I have always been the responsible type and have never actually dreamt of doing something like this on my own. I have always just been satisfied to watch other's adventures. The only real long distance ride I have made if from Asheville to Alaska and back. So guys, My question is this... Should a responsible elementary school teacher tell the system to "fuck off!" and with his wife's blessing embark on an RTW??

If that's your wife's photo in your avatar - you'd better stick around home.

Otherwise, get packing.

Kurt,

Sometimes being responsible means that you get up, take a shower, go to work, come home, eat supper, and go to bed...

If you TRULY have the blessing of your wife and you are financially able to take this trip of a lifetime.. GO!!!!

Tomorrow is never promised to us, one day you will find yourself an old man and unable to complete a journey like this.. and then you will "What if" yourself to death!

My personal opinion of being responsible is that you are also responsible for your mental well being! What is so responsible about kicking yourself in the ass for not taking "the trip" while you drive the same road to work day in and day out...

Have fun, let us know when you start the thread for your trip!

You have two years to complete your trip.

Then get over here and teach my son from Kindergarden to high school.

I'm sick and tired of teachers who consider children just "factory equipment".

I hope you teach Geography or Earth sciences. I can't think of a better way to understand what you think you know. Most geography teachers around here have never been outside their own city limits.

Well, you asked . . .

My tuppence worth, YMMV:

1) For chrissake, keep your job and don't quit until you find another! We're in a recession, man, it may be ages before you find something else!

2) Reconcile with your boss and behave yourself at work. And guess what: you're not the only person who has philosophical differences with the system. Working stinks, generally speaking, so work and support your family.

2) Take a trip only if you can afford it (i.e., pay cash for it, within your family budget). And for god's sake, blowing money on fantasy travel AFTER you lose a job (in a recession!) is totally unadvisable, unless you have other sources of wealth like Jed Clampett, or a rich daddy. In that case, please adopt me!

4) Go hug & kiss your wife, she sounds like a real keeper to me.

5) If in doubt, refer to numbers 1 & 4.

Taking fantasy trips, in a recession, after you quit a job?? Holy shit, how can you rationalize that?

the only one I agree with is Number 4

go on the trip, have the time of your life, if your a good teacher they will let you take a sabaticle, (SP??) or some one else will hire you, and with the education you will receive on the trip will make you that much better of a teacher

take your wife along for part of it,
if you put it off all you will do is get older

So you are saying I should only teach kids to regurgitate answers for a test they take at the end of the year in reading and math only? I should continue to damage kids by standardize testing? The kids have no right to learn geography, science, history etc. This may explain how we got to the point we are in this country.

We are financially able to do this. Education is recession proof (even people getting bailed out keep on producing kids).

I will probably change schools for a year and then take the trip beginning in June 2010.

As far as my wife is concerned...been married to her for thirty years and plan on keeping her at least another thirty!!

Keep wrapped tight in your expectations, of responsibility.

I would rather travel, It's the ultimate in recession proofing.

Phoeey on vagt6. I've been responsible for most of my 49 year-old life, and one of my few regrets is not having bought a bike earlier and not having traveled more. When you have opportunities like this, they are a gift. Do you want to be old and thinking about woulda, shoulda, coulda? Or do you want to grab life and drink deeply? GO. And I'm looking forward to the trip report and pics. I'm envious!
