2009 Climate change sampling request
I'm currently involved in climate change research on all 7 continents, and will be sampling water in probably 15-20 countries this year (just returned from Mexico a couple days ago).
My idea (for good or bad) is to potentially enlist the help of some of the long and short distance travelers on the list serve to do some collecting of surface waters to help define moisture cycling around the World. If I could find 10-15 people that would be willing to collect 20+ samples on their travels (and note the latitude, longitude, and elevation along with the river or lake name if known), it would go a great way to better understanding how the atmosphere is circulating today and in turn allow us to better predict what will happen in the future. The oxygen and deuterium isotope values of the water samples will be determined and those values will be evaluated to track the pathways and recycling of atmospheric water vapor across all of the continents.
I figured that because most ADV riders travel with GPS devices and make it to out of the way places that this might be an effective way to gain greater global coverage. If the effort generates media attention, I think that'll be good press for us all as well.
I would supply the 30ml plastic bottles and pay for postage. I traveled 26,000km last summer with 350 bottles on my bike, but am only hoping for 20-30 samples from some individuals. The sampling is quite easy, fill a bottle, screw the cap on, label it with the coordinates, and once you get 20 or so, mail them to Canada. You can read more about some of this work at
If you think this is a good idea, and would like to help, let me know and I'll get some more details to you.
