Douglas D. Alley Drive and Douglas Dwight Alley Park, Woods of Yorkshire, Newark, Delaware, are named for PFC Douglas Dwight Alley, Alpha Company, 1st battalion (mechanized), 5th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division, Unites States Army. Twenty-year old Doug was killed in action near Cu Cui, South Vietnam, on February 26, 1966. Doug was killed while securing parts of the elaborate networks of tunnels established by the Viet Cong in the Cu Cui area North of Saigon.
Doug was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his heroic actions. A Valorous Unit Award was earned by the 5th Infantry as a result of numerous individual acts of extraordinary heroism by Doug and other members of the 5th Infantry in ground combat against the Viet Cong in the Republic of Vietnam between January and April 1966.

Doug’s name is inscribed on panel 5E, line 78 of the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial in Washington, D. C. He is one of 122 Delaware citizens listed among over 58,000 names of those killed in Vietnam.

If you are coming down to Smyrna on Wednesday night you should plan on hitting SportZone for bike night. Maybe we could get the bikes good and dirty and go for the dirtiest bike award.

Nice grab MC.

Let's see, MakerChief has the tag and Tom's all moved. No need to go to Newark now (until Tom's blowout housewarming party).

The Merci Boxcar

Here's the backstory:

http://mercitrain.org/Delaware/

The Merci Train was a train of 49 French railroad box cars filled with tens of thousands of gifts of gratitude from at least that many individual French citizens. They were showing their appreciation for the more than 700 American box cars of relief goods sent to them by (primarily) individual Americans in 1948. The Merci Train arrived in New York harbor on February 3rd, 1949 and each of the 48 American states at that time received one of the gift laden box cars. The 49th box car was shared by Washington D.C. and the Territory of Hawaii. Parades and ceremonies of welcome were conducted in the state capitols and major cities of almost all the states. The largest and most attended was in New York City where more than 200,000 people turned out to welcome that state's assigned box car.

Thanks
Today's ride was windy all the way. Sun going down cloudy on the way. Stop to help a biker wire up his shifter that snap at bracket. He had the shifter reversed 1 up 5 down.
