Tyres make the bike
I had my front tyre blow out a couple of weeks ago, good job, that crappy Avon Gripster only had 2mm left anyway.
I have been very happy with the Bridgestone TW48 on the rear, although it only lasted 7000km,so this time I went for the TW43,it looked more aggressive.
I was tempted to put the TW42 on the front, but went for a Conti TCK80.The Honda XLV750 has proved to be a bit of a handfull on gravel roads, although not many 750s would be able to get near it.With 48HP at the rear wheel and 475lbs wet,I had to be gentle with throttle and brakes.
NOT ANY MORE!!!!! I've just come home from a 200km blast on some gravel roads, now I can use everthing the bikes got to give, full throttle punching out of 2nd gear corners, red lining through every gear (not 5th!) I haven't been able to ride this hard on gravel for years,I thought I was just growing old and slowing down!
It's the front tyre thats done it.I've always used a full knob on gravel, and find it difficult to ride without one.But I didn't think this bike could cope with one,it's just so heavy,a knob would be pushed to it's limit.
I haven't tried it very hard on sealed roads yet, that wil require a bit more time.Coming back home I came across a Harley,he didn't like me behind him,so kept going fast on the straight bits, then holding me up in the corners.Even with new knobs that I don't know on damp roads,I can't ride THAT slow around corners! So I pulled out and took him out of a corner - then missed a gear as I went passed!!!
200km and 1mm off the rear already! 5mm to the edge of the TW43,but the Conti is all used,I hope the knobs will bend so I can use all the rear tyre, this is my main worry, can the knob handle hard cornering,I'm not slowing down just for a bloody tyre!!
