So cruising on the interstate at 70 for 500 miles is gonna be a buzzy time with the 250?

I like the specs of this thing but Id also like to be able to consistently run at highway speeds.

Great thread, I just ran in to a fellow who last year rode a xt250 from Vancouver to Alaska and back last summer. I weigh 220, and it seems a set of these could work out for me and my girl!

Freeway suitability & milage

Hey Leafman60,

Without changing the sprockets the XT would be hard pressed to do 500 miles at 70 mph. I have had mine in the low 70s for short runs on the hwy but this is not a strong point for the little 250. It will do but....yes at higher cruising speeds it can be a bit buzzy.

As far as milage I get about 130 miles out of the 1.9 gallons (CA version) before I hit reserve so about 68 mpg.

Yes, thanks. I like the little bike a lot. I almost bought a left-over model last summer. There are, or were, some killer deals on past year's models. Instead I ended up with a BMW G650XCo. The 650 will cruise at 80-90 all day and then do pretty well on gravel and dirt roads. Love it.

I still like the look and feel of the XT. I sure wish they'd make an XT350 ! I think that would kick it up a notch that maybe it needs.

XTs fine for what it is - my DRZ400E is less fun here than my XT.

Not as fun as a KDX - but fun enough

I wanted to chime in and say that 70mph for 500 miles on the interstate is just a little too much to ask of an XT250. It would be possible on flat ground with no headwind, but it would be pushing it to the max. I rode 350 miles the other day on mine, about 100 miles of that was 60-65 on the highway and it just purred along at that speed. I got it up to 77 briefly, laying down as low on the tank as I could. It took a long time to go from 70-77 and then felt like it hit a rev limiter. I'm not sure it has the power to push a taller sprocket ratio, and you wouldn't want to give up the lower end if you ride trails. -al

Hey Alacrity,

Can I ask what hand guards you have on the XT? Did you have to mod anything to get them on?

Thanks!!
Michael

A little help please

OK Had this 08 XT for about 3 years. It is the wife's bike, she tried to kill it.. then my daughter joined me on a dual sport event..she did great, but there was this one water hole

OK so bike went underwater. (As a sied note this bike has been the greatest at restarting after falling down, no flooding issue etc. like other bikes) Pulled it out of the water onto the trail and started draining water. The air box does not apparently have a drain. It was totally full of water. We truned the bike complete upside down, sitting on handle bars and rear bike rack. I had to lean it back and forth for the water to keep coming out. Set it back up right and then it started up . We rode for the rest of the day and back to camp say another 40 miles.

So made a note to self to go home and change oil etc. Ordered new air filter. So then maintenance began. As my luck would have it or operator error, whatever I could not get the oil plug loose. I eventually rounded off the head of the bolt. Now, not one to be beaten, I went afterit. I turned the bike back upside down and worked on the bolt. got it loose. Put rightside up again changed the oil and air filter. Buttoned it back up and will not start.

Took seat off again and looked into air box and there was oil in there . It did not look like the new clean oil, so maybe from being upside down, old oil from crank case or something.... Clean it out and bike fires up then quits. Bottom line is bike will run with the air filter out but as soon as I put the air filter in the bike quits, any thoughts?
Thanks

Cycra CRM - had to play with them a bit to align, but no mods. They are on ProContour YZ Hi - so not sure if they'd work as well on the stockers.

Better pic of the attachment from the side

Looking at the mud pic above again those are Cycra Composites - the CRMs mosied on - but both fit fine

Are those bars 1-1/8" ??? Gotta get a set for the wifes, but could not find for the stock bars (7/8) ??? Also wondered if you have a link to the bars you have on your bike ?

Thank you- and man that bar/guard set up really looks nice on that bike !
