It's a bit odd that they provide torque specs for fittings with crush washers. Regardless of the torque, if the washer isn't crushed, it's not right. That said, I do like following the torque settings.

In English, can someone describe for me the correct chain tension on an 04 Dakar? I am stupid and unsure if my measuring device even has mm. In inches, how much slack should it have, I assume on the side stand. Measuring from the inside of the chain pr outside Then tightening it, looks simple enough, any tricks? It sorta creeps me out there is no cotter pin holding the axle on. Maybe 20 bikes lifetime, never saw this before.
Thanks for any help.
Great bike, handles like a dream. Never saw smoother shifting.

Sorry I am kind of slow. Is it FG-6 or FG-8 or F109R for a 2006 Dakar.

on my dakar the oil changes are easier with a few mods i did. first off with the yz forks and aftermarket headlight i dont have to unbolt all that extra plastics. then on the oil filter i made a case saver so i dont have to take off the stock sprocket cover then i cut a slot in the stock skid plate so i get a socket right on it with out taking it off.i even had my shrouds cut so i can drain my oil tank without taking off the shrouds but i put stockers back on so thats about all i have to remove now.

Ok, thanks.
Doesn't look like you cut any of the frame away ? That's really what I felt was in the way of mounting it on top instead of underneath.... might have another look at it.

Sure, they could've left it without any drains so you had to suck all the oil out. That'd be a real bitch

If it turns out to be impossible to get that sump plug out just hollar and we'll figure something out.... there's always a way

I looked at the maxbmw parts list for this '01 Dakar. The Fiche says sump plug is a 24mmx2.

15 11 13 7 708 604 SCREW PLUG, MAGNETIC - M24X2

So I ordered the 24mm X 2 Fumoto:

FG-6 FG-6: Engine Oil Drain Valve 24mm-2.0 $32.45 1 $32.45

Those shots of your bike on its side, I am at that point now. Today I think I am going to go get a small Dremel and grind the sides of that bolt to make them flat again. I ground a 23mm socket to remove the chamfer, tapped it on the sump plug and put my craftsman 1/2" drive breaker bar on it. Then I took my 6 Ton floor jack with a piece of wood on it under the bike to put upward pressure on the socket so it would not slip off. That soft alum just kept falling apart. Its really bad now.

Really pissed because I leave for the TAT Friday.......

All I could think about while I was changing it was "Well that's stupid, all they had to do was (xxxx)." It's as though they were mad at mechanics that day.

I bought one of those cheap pumps that you attach to the end of a drill and it works great to empty the resevoir. No need to remove any bodywork.

I guess the only down side is that with the Fumoto there is no magnet to catch to metal bits.
