Motorcycle rental in Italy?
I'm traveling to Italy in a week for my honeymoon and would like to rent a bike.
Does anybody have any particular rental companies in Italy that they could recommend? Also, does anybody know if these rental places offer damage insurance? I saw a couple companies that charge a $2500 damage deposit. I'd hate to have to pay that! Ideally, I would like to rent a bike in Rome and be able drop it off at another related rental place near Cinque Terre or Genoa. Are there rental places in Italy that work with each other in circumstances like mine? Thanks in advance! |

Search for one of the guy here, his user is Tagesk or [Task]. I hope I get the spelling right.
IIRC, he rents Translaps including cases, and is located north of Rome (Toscany/Cinque Terre ?). Family business, something I always appreciate. Tell him Goodwill says hi!

Italy has tons of bike and scooter rentals. I've gotten bikes from Alis Agostini in Mandello del Lario (Lake Como) in the North, a nice hour-long train ride from Milan. Which doesn't sound ideal for your itinerary. That said, you might want to change it as North Italy is amazingly beautiful with the Alps and great riding all around there. Though I must say, having toured Italy twice from top to bottom, that the whole place is stellar. Sardinia is fantastic.
Cities: Genoa is manageable. Florence was okay. Rome: I have absolutely no desire to ride there. One day I will fly in and wander by foot. The $2500 damage deposit would be standard. If - IF - you damage the bike they want to be able to cover costs. If you DON'T damage the bike, you get the money back. That's only fair. I don't know about damage insurance. You might try asking on the HorizonsUnlimited.com motorcycle travel forum. You might ask your current insurance company, as well. Here are two links to travelogues from Italy on my Motorcycle Misadventures journeys: http://www.carlaking.com/italianlessons/ http://www.carlaking.com/adriatic/ (this has RENTAL info) You're going to love riding in Italy! |

Riding in the big cities isn't any fun. You will love Tuscany. You didn't say how long you are going for, but maybe a side trip to the island of Corsica which is a motorcyclist's paradise.

Thanks for all the replies, guys.
My fiance does ride a vintage scooter and she's a great passenger on a motorcycle. In fact, I think she prefers to be a passenger when it's through the scenic areas. I also have no desire to ride in Rome, or Florence for that matter. (Just the scenic rural mountain roads) I guess I have my research cut out for me tonight. ![]() Thanks again! |

I agree that northern Italy is the place to ride. Tuscany & Umbria are beautiful with great roads,villages,wine,etc.etc. Just beware of the Italian drivers as they will crawl up your ass to get by you. ANd definetly stay out of the cities, they are CRAZY. But, it will be a great place to ride.
