Lonerockz Ridez Again

Well The last time I was on a motorcycle was Jun 22nd 1998. This was the last day of the Minnesota 1000 that year. I finished and was never more tired in all my life. My wife was pregnant and convinced me that I should give up riding. Flash forward 10.5 years and I have convinced my wife that my children are old enough that they will remember me if I die. So I once again have a bike. On Tuesday I picked up a new to me 2008 Versys (with all of 636 miles on it). I picked it up Saturday from its 600 mile maintenance and today I went on my first real ride in 10 years.

My original plan was to go to John Wayne's homestead to get the photo tag for the central region, but at 1:30am someone posted it! Good thing I checked before hitting the road. It would have been 250 miles on freeway... not the most exciting ride!

So instead I headed south and east in to Wisconsin.

I am woefully unprepared. I don't have a tank bag yet, so I got out my backpack. I have a 15 year old jacket, and a 12 year old helmet with speakers in it. I stopped at the Hastings Target to a cable to plug in my iPhone so I could listen to some tunes. I discovered that they are shipping Peanut flavor Clif bars again!!! Yeah!!! No I can eat cliff bars without getting the squirts!

Scenic target:

Scenic Hastings Water Tower & WalMart:

I Discover that only having a backpack really sucks. I'm not young and getting it on and off with my leather jacket on is a pain in the... well back!

I forgot to take a picture at home of my odo before I left so I took one here.

I head on down the road. I think I'm heading for Prescott, but I forgot the right road and head for Red Wing instead. I never forget the right road, but things have changed in 10 years!

I cant see my map when its in my back pack so I got off my planed route in Wisc. Tooling along 53 in Strum Wisconsin I come across this:

Little did I know this would become a theme.

I kept meandering along and at one point needed to stop for a map check. I pulled to a Church parking lot. Not a soul in sight at 11:30 on a Sunday! Even with the easy goin' policies!

I made it to La Crosse and came across this:

A nice Burlington Route S-4. I was hungry so I tooled around looking for someplace to eat. Found an OK local diner called Rosies Cafe. I discovered that Wisconsin not only allows smoking, but they don't require a no smoking section...

The serve this thing called "The Mess." French Fries, Onion, Green Pepper, Sausage, Ham fried together with Scrambled Eggs. If you eat it with a Breakfast burrito you get your picture on the wall of shame.

You will not find my picture there...

Heading out of La Crosse I came across my second piece of army surplus:

I decided that it was time to head back to the Cities so I headed up the Minnesota side of the river. I was hopping to see the eagles that often roost along the river. I did stop and see something that I think were eagles, but they were flying pretty far out over the river so no pic. I also came across a huge flock of Pelicans. The were feeding by simply putting their heads in the water must be a fair amount of fish in the river right now!

I booked it home cause it was getting late and forecast called for possible rain. Being woefully unprepared for rain I was not going to get caught out.

All told 360 miles. Not bad for my first day back on a bike.

Hooray for 2 wheels!

Great ride report, Steve!

As Steve knows, I just got back in the saddle again myself after a bad crash in 2005. I admit I was scared to ride again for awhile. Astride my new-used ST1100 ABS/TCS, I'm looking forward to putting on some serious (and safe) miles this year!
