This I have to see. Looks like you have some fun bikes to ride. How long are you going to be up there? Are you still thinking of doing a tour extension to Europe?

Cry No Europe this time

Skip,

We've got 16 days total, but no Europe this time. The deal is that you can only stay 7 days and have it be a stopover. Otherwise, it's another full fare to Europe and back to the States. So we decided it would be better to get to know Iceland than just do a quick stopover and then run to Europe.

We'd rather fully explore Iceland and later tour all of Europe and the rest of the continent when we have the time. Sooo... it's just Iceland for now, not that that's a bad thing .

Hi

I was there last summer. Great place, indeed. Take a look at my ride report if you like. Perhaps you can find some useful hints there:

A little update

Well our planning is going along swimmingly. Or should that be geothermically? I don't know... It's going well.

Anyway, we've received some help from a few people that have already been there including Dario1. If you haven't read his ride report AND seen his pics, you have really missed something. Do yourself a favor and check out his ride report at:

You won't be disappointed. Dario's photography can't be beat. Oh, and thanks Dario for your spreadsheet. Mille grazie!

Time's a wastin'

Well, we've finally got the route nearly planned. To wet your appetite, here's a view of the overall route. We're still planning the inland portions of the ride since there's no way we're going to miss out on the gravel while we're there, but here goes....

More soon!

Have fun, it is a sight to see. People are great there, food is pricey but the scenery is amazing. Look forward to seeing your route in phots as I did not make it up to the North as some of the highland roads were still closed.

Ride safe and make sure you try the Puffin.

inmate in iceland

Hey guys.

This will be an awesome trip for you.

I live in Reykjavik, Iceland and have all my life. I have also travelled extensively around the country and especially in the central highlans.

If you guys need any information about anything id be more than happy to help. I should know the place pretty well, since after all im icelandic.

I know about some great remote places where you can get rid of all the other tourists.

About the bikes. If you plan on going up to the central highlands, the xt is probably better since it is more dirt oriented. There are some glacial rivers that you might need to cross and also alot of the roads are pretty gnarly.

Just pm me if you need anything.

best regards
Atli

About ready to take off!!!!

Well everyone, the time is nearing... Only 2 more days until Kim and Mike's Most 2009 Excellent Icelandic Adventure begins for real!!!!!

The route is planned and the bikes are ready. With the help of our friend in Iceland Hafsteinn, an almost brand spankin new TransAlp awaits me and a nice XT 660 awaits Kim. Hafsteinn even put in a lowering link for Kim so her tootsies will reach the ground.

So it's a Sunday afternoon departure and a late Sunday night arrival into Reykjavik, with Hafsteinn picking us up at the airport. We'll stay the first night at his house and then we're off and riding.

More details soon!
