First kudos to Emmbeedee for the savy enlarged parts diagram ! This diagram shows what appears to be a large "trough" in the cam's plain bearing surface. That surely allows the passage of motor oil to lubricate the plain bearing surfaces and the excess oil exits into the missing surface of the cam's lobes, allowing them to be lubricated as well... What's the angry collective's views on this ?... 996DL "It's the motor Billy." |

Man, seriously, you didn't disappoint me, easy there Griz. After looking at the diagram again, I do see what appears to be "reliefs" in the cam shaft diameter. I thought the red arrows were pointing to what appears to be slots. You have to admit, it's a bizarre peculiarity seeing something as crude as a cast relief like that. My error. Thanks for the dissertation on Rotax.

![]() READ THE WHOLE THREAD and LOOK AT ALL THE PICS. Those CAMS are cast pieces that are then machined where needed. The "troughs" are obviously there for a reason so they're part of the casting. Go ride yer fookin motorcycle and stop spreading mis-information on the intraweb

![]() Not chunks missing. These cast voids are meant for oil passage, and are meant to be there to lubricate cam rod contact points (as shown in shop manual above). We're beating a dead horse here with this cam shaft thing. Now as for this oil leak.... that concerns me how that happened. ChiTown, please keep us posted. Nothing to see here.

I know this thing is dead but something I wanted to point out in the picture.
The texture of the shaft and the texture of the once thought missing material from the cam look to be very similar. It looks like it was cast and then the cams are machined/ground to tolerance. The similarity/uniformity is what stood out to me even though its hard to see in the picture. The missing x-files material was never there to begin with but Rotax could have at least made it look pretty and then this thread wouldn't exist. |
