Northwest GA: John's Mtn

Pretty much the first ride on this bike, a 94 XT600. I just sold my 07 SV650N and bought this bike as something to tide me over till I can find a BMW650.

I finished installing a new clutch in it Sunday morning and made sure there were no leaks. I decided to take it for a test ride to see if she would hold together.

I left the house about 2pm Sunday and headed south towards John's Mtn WMA. Took a photo from the overlook on top of John's Mtn: (sucky cell phone pic)

better photo:

All in all I logged about 100 miles and nearly went to the north end of Rome, GA exploring some of the mtn I had never been to before. Had a blast on the new thumper and made it home safe and sound around 6pm. I have a few more photos to upload from a real camera later today.

Good view from the over look, but it was a little hazy out for some reason.

Really like that area. Not much dirt, but plenty of good roads with very little traffic.

You probably know this, but just case: follow the pocket road on out to hw 136, head toward villanow and lafayette, pass villanow, turn left on Armuchee road like you are going to Subligna, turn right on Smith Gap Road, easy to miss, it looks like a private farm road, there is a little cemetary there, road quikly turns to dirt, nice littl creek crossing then up the mountain, it's dirt to Trion.

Also, just west of the Armuchee Rd turnoff at the top of the hill, there's a FS road that goes north. I think it's called Shipps Gap. I'm not sure where it terminates, but it looks like it continues on to pavement to the north.

If we are thinking of the same one, real easy to zoom by there at the top of the hill, that one looks like you could almost get to Houston Valley OHV on the map, but it is blocked by a big dirt pile on down, and the road is not maintained on the other side, felt like it might be private land on the other side.

It makes me sad to see those enormous ruts on rocky road knowing they've been filled, graded and paved
CR103 used to be dirt too......no more

I checked out your report. Man, GaM that is a cool area. I've rock climbed that Sand Rock village back in college and camped in almost the very same spot!! Let me know if you ever decide to do that ride again. Did you go very far into pettijon's?

Thanks for the old trip report! I live just north in Rocky Face, GA, and know most of those roads, but dang - its been years since I have ridden any of them. I am going to have to make a trip over to Corpsewood sometime too, never been there.

Never been on that 15 mile road to Trion either, gonna put that on my tick list.

Caving is/was my main hobby for years and years (hence the user name ). I know pigeon mtn and the rangers very well over there.

I still need to do some work on this "old new to me bike", but does anybody want to do a day or weekend trip and hit all of these areas sometime this spring?
