All Part of the Adventure

Jindy blokes cover as much of Tasmania in 15 days

Day 1 27th February 2009
All (Matt, Scott (KTM 625’s], Shane and Geoff [Honda XR 600 and 650]) packed up and meet at Matt’s leave by 07:20

riding down the Barry Way having breaky at Buchan.

Ride the ‘A’ road to Melbourne and arrive near the boat 16:00. Have minor overheating issue with XR.

Board the Spirit of Tasmania I

and a southerly kicks in at the heads with a bit of swell. Matt’s snoring a highlite earning the naming rights ‘Chainsaw’.

Eh? All part of the adventure

Day 2 28th February 2009
Booted off the boat by 06:15 into the dark of Devonport, so head straight to Maccas for a feed and repack.
Cruise the back roads to Ulverstone and hang by the ocean

till Northwest Motorcycles is open. All get new tyres and are on the road again by 11am.

Punt up the Bass Highway towards Burnie a bit boring but beautiful scenery. Take road to Sisters beach for fun then have to turn back and turn left at Montumana to ride along our first GPS’d route. GPS sucks hard on AA batteries but finally work through to Roger River.

Then along the Western Explorer a bit before turning north and cutting across to the Bass Hwy again. Scott and Chainsaw take off in front, thinking they know where they are going, get caught up in each other racing and fly 5Ks past our next turn, they’re heading to Smithton. Geoff and Shane wonder where they are and follow the mapped route to Montague. Shane’s low on fuel, we head back to Smithton, to also get phone reception and supplies. Contact the others and all meet at the servo. Scott and Chainsaw do two laps of the A2 Bass Hwy between Smithton and Redpa before getting some local help and following the mapped route and meeting in Smithton. Load up with supplies and head to a campsite Shane and Geoff saw near Montague.

Turns out to be very nice with toilet but no shower, basically empty at Stoney Point.

Day 3 1st March 2009
Cool morning and up and gone by 9:00

heading to Woolnorth and NE tip. Find as informed that the property gate locked and no through access tours only.

Check out all the wind turbines

and follow planned route to get 10m from joining road and another locked gate. Have to double back and go around. Heading to Marrawah, stop and check out Mt Cameron

then onto Marrawah and onto Arthur River

and Temma. Excellent dirt road with spectacular views. From Temma heading south to Sandy Cape.

Find the going a bit tough and there has been little rain making to sand very soft.

This and the narrow twin track ruts causes many offs as it is a tank slapper bitch track.

About 1K pass the Balfour track junction Shane spits it and earns the naming rights ‘Fuse’.
We double back and head along the rocky and hard Balfour track.

Heaps better on rider and as is very dry, only small wet holes to negotiate. Spotted the Mt Balfour track from a way off and decide to have a crack.

Hell fun hill climb, with only Geoff (2 attempts) and Scott (1) making it.

Balfour track ends on the Western Explorer

so we punt down it to Corinna. A hoot of a dirt road smooth and fast with again excellent scenery. At Corinna decide to camp.

Facilities include a nice coin shower and restaurant just a little expensive but quality.

Day 4 2nd March 2009
Went to bed early and up late as getting a bit tired. The condensation also took a while to dry, so we were finally packed up and loading on the Fatman Barge crossing the Pieman River by 12:00.

Missed turn into Pieman River mouth and turned in at Granville Harbour.
Tried to ride up to the heads but the dry weather made this track similar to the Sandy Cape track.

This then caused the Fuse to blow with “I can’t believe you got me this far…..did you not hear anything I said yesterday!” Head back a bit, have a rest and a fish for an hour. Heading south again, ride the Granville Harbour to Trial Harbour track.

Another excellent and reasonably tough track. There is a memorial at the washed out bridge on the Granite creek.

Trial Harbour is another picturesque place with an 8’ wave breaking over the reef.

The opposite end is Zeehan, which was the next stop. We get fuel and head on to Strahan via the B27. Head out to Ocean beach for a look and the KTM boys can’t resist a blat along the beach. They have a race to the log? and back.

We get a cabin in the van park, do our washing, clean up and hit the town. Very touristy place and meet some interesting people over a beer and a game of pool. Back at the cabin have a game of cards before bed.

Day 5 3rd March 2009
Out of cabin by 10:00 and onto Ocean beach riding down to Hells Gates,

then around to Macquarie Heads.

Overcast conditions we ride around to Regatta Point then hightail it to Queenstown.

Queenstown is as mining town with a moonscape and 1950s feel.

We are in light rain as we head out to Mt McCall.

Check out the Bird River track with its eerie feel, as it was once a train line, overgrown into also a tunnel and the rain now about causing low light. Head along to Mt McCall to find an impassable locked gate, double back to look for a camp. Ride around the very slippery Mt Jukes area then thinking of heading back to Queenstown

find by Lake Bruny, a Hydro Tas picnic shed. Manage to fit all bikes in, gear our gear drying, beds laid out and a table to feed and play cards on.

The sky’s then open with a spectacular light and sound shows with lots of rain.

Eek All part of the Adventure

Day 6 4th March 2009
Still raining in the morning with big thunder so a full wet gear ride on hand.

Back to Queenstown for smoko then in the wind and rain to Lake St Clair.
Fucken freezing. We thaw at Lake Clair which is very touristy wilderness type place but no room for us. Manage a room at the pub back down the road at Derwent Bridge.

Warm, showered, dry and in the bar by 14:00.

The area is the end of the Overland walk from Cradle Mountain and in walk all these wet walkers. This begins a fun night of stories and tales as we are sucked into the walking group. Fun night.
