Isn't the wr450f sold as a street legal bike in Australia? Where does that fit in? I know it's only a 5 speed but so are the DRs and DRZs. How does it compare price wise?

Been doing some research on dual-sporting the current 450F, and it looks easy to do.....it is already wired for a hi/lo beam and a rear brake light....the Baja kit is $350. Seems like they could detune it a bit, throw on a cush hub (or clutch basket, which btw exists already by swapping from the YZF atv), give it a little more oil capacity, lower the compression a ttle, beef up the lower end components, and get a bike that was a more typical 5k valve adjusts and 3k oil changes. Yes, the super long intervals on the 250R are cool, but from my own experience, outside of a notable few on this website, who really needs 26k valve checks on a small/mid bore thumper dual sport? Id venture a guess that most 250r owners ride less than 5k miles per year. If you are riding the bike hard in the dust, water, sand, and grime, you should be cutting down your intervals anyways.
Or, how about they bore/stroke the 250 to something over 300 from the factory. Even if it cut the recommended intervals in half, they would still sell really well. KTMs 350/500 is pretty much the perfect bike for me, but just can't justify 10k for something that will worth half that once it gets dirty.

That's an F not an R, we can get the WR250R here in Aus, and the street legal WRF's in both 250 & 450, , what people want is a street legal WR450R. Yamaha would just need to be careful they don't make it to heavy.

....If you click on the image gallery it looks like it has those same number plate holders and indicators etc....(as well as the enduro type lights)If it could be imported wouldn't it suffice?
I wonder what sort of kms people are getting before any major work?

mmm....I see what you mean...I can see the difference in the images/motos/light set up... but the last one under the WR450F shows indicators etc ....Is this a website error perhaps? Maybe in Europe it's one and the same?...stripped off lights/number plate bracket in the previous pictures leave that led tail light, but I see the black sump guard still there...

it has nothign really to do with the turn signals, as much as the whole different motor platform and emissions legal.
Look at the difference in the 250f and the 250r you will see it is the difference from a race motor to a motor that has its first service interval a 26k instead of 1k or less. |

Don't hold your breath.
Blame your government. Yamaha had to give up a couple of two stroke outboard motors to keep the two stroke YZs in their US line up. Overall corporate emissions standards come into play here. This is similar ro why we do not get the new VW 1.6 TDI diesel that gets 75 MPG....it is a little dirtier per gallon.....but the kicker it uses so much less fuel it is cleaner per mile. Keep putting the same people in charge in DC & you'll keep getting the same results. We lost all the cool small two stroke sport bikes in the mid 80's through mid 90's because of how "dirty" they were. Their tiny sales numbers would not have added to any overall polution problem.
