yeah, I wouldn't hold out much hope for 60mph highway speed. As stated before it's plenty anemic in the acceleration dept; 60mph - but requiring much more throttle to pull the gearing, then throw in some hilly roads . . . plus, it would hurt round-town performance.
But! we'll see in a couple weeks!

It runs! With 5 gears now
First order of the day was to put in a new tube in the rear tire to replace the one that broke when we first rode the bike. I'm glad no little kids were around to hear the filth that came out of my mouth, but in the end I got it in. I do recomend that everyone keep around a Pirelli XR rally tire just for this task ![]() A simple exersize of man (and screwdrivers) versus machine. ![]() Then it was finally time to put the freshened lump in. Note: when the bike uses the engine for the structure of the frame, I do NOT recomend even sitting on the bike with the engine out. when we first got the engine in some of the bolt holes were 1" out. Some modest cursing plus brian and I hanging on opposite ends of the bike (with the center on a 5gal bucket) fixed the problem. Some bolts needed a little help, no big deal. ![]() Add oil and gas for instant satisfaction the dog put up a good fight, but I won the race ![]() The only hangup is the cam chain is making a lot of noise. The factory service manual simply says to loosen the bolt while it is idling and then tighten it back up, but when we tried that it made no difference. Should I have pre-tensioned it a bunch before I started it, then loosened the bolt so it could ease the tension to the right amount, instead of expecting it to tighten it to the right amount? |

that's my friend's mini. it has a japanese vtec b18 and transmission (w/ lsd). it has the oil cooler, header, a custom exhaust he made, and a modified edelbrock intake (to clear the firewall). i believe it's on a hondata ecu. i'm not sure if the motor is built or not, i know he had the head off before he put the motor in, and he tried some after market cams, but is back to the stock ones now.

I've put maybe 30 miles on the bike just blasting around my girlfriend's parent's hobby farm, soon I'll dump the oil and put some new stuff in. I should have put in new clutch plates while i had it apart, but they still have a little life in them and it's not too hard to change them. I'm happy to say it starts 2nd kick every time
I messed with the timing chain tensioner again, I checked to make sure it was all moving free, I could hear it adjust so i'm assuming it's good and doing it's job. The noise doesn't seem to be as bad now, either it got better or I'm used to it. Soon I'll get around to buying some feeler gauges to check the valve lash and setting the carb better (it needs to start first kick ).Still needs tires, chain and sprockets, the fork rebuilt, new or at least re greased wheel and stem bearings, lights (I have a acerbis tail light on the way, but am not sure what to do for the headlight), a speedo, and the seat needs some love. I got my riding permit yesterday and should be able to transfer the title of the bike next week. |

thought i'd update with some new pics. it's getting further along. soon it will get new tires which will make it much more rideable, until then i'll just be cruising around on backroads.
tires, seat cover, painting the exhaust and springs should make it look presentable. still need to get signal lights. looks like i'm gonna convert to 12v, any advice? ![]() ![]()
