The mower ran 1 hour and toasted the new pto switch! I think I'm gathering that the pto clutch is bad, pulling too much load but not enough to toast the fuse, at least thats what others with Scag mowers have experienced.

I just got the new switch, gonna tinker with it some more and rule out everything else before I have to drop $300 on a clutch.

is it an electro mag switch/clutch like an automotive AC compressor?

i googled it, looks very much like an automotive AC clutch.

there isnt much there to go wrong.
its a winding behind the spinning part, and magnets in the spinning part, with friction material between.

energize the winding, and it pulls the magnets closer, thus sticking the clutch together.
use an ohm meter and check the plug on the clutch.

it should have some reasonably high resistance.
if the varnish has broken down, or its been rubbing on something, some of the windings may no longer be insulated, and internally shorted, this would greatly reduce clmaping power by the clutch too.

edit

Hey, THIS shows its adjustable for wear.

http://www.google.com/imgres?q=scag+...1t:429,r:0,s:0

maybe its worn and needs adjusting to close the air gap.

EDIT again.

google is my bitch

It should be around 2.8 ohms, I'm getting 0.6? Somethings screwy in the clutch.

And yeah I looked into adjusting the clutch this morning, in all my years of mowing I never knew that you could or needed to check that.

My transmission is toast $2800 to repair it, I need new brakes all around ABD new discs too. I have a broken windshield from last week due to a deer accident ..... Ugh with 184k and counting I think I will sell it and get something else while the transmission still pulls the truck to a dealer. Damn

You could always go with something that doesn't have a clutch, or a PTO, or any electrics...... or even a motor....

Wow, bad luck there, Charles. Martha's probably still trying to figure out what you did to the tranny so you'd end up with a vehicle newer than hers again!!!

There are sure some smoking deals out there, I dunno if you are buying new or used Charlie? I have a good friend that is the manager at Superior chevrolet in siloam, he is very honest and will make you a haggle free deal right off the bat. I bought my wifes suburban there last year, and my dad bought his Tahoe there, and two other friends recently bought there and were very happy. I think they are advertising 10k off Chevy 1/2 tons right now. Theyve got some clean used trucks too.

Just adjust the Xmitter side until it's pointed directly at the receiver side and you should have red LED on the receiver block light up when it's lined up correctly.
