this is what I have at home, for 90% of what I do, I got it at lowes, or wally mart for cheaper than shown there.
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...=31-89058959-2 everyone will tell you to " get a FLUKE!" fluke meters are great. they are slightly more accurate, 1000 times more expensive, and just like the $20 meter, if you try and measure the wrong thing, you just ruined the meter. swing in here sometime, Ill show you the basics , and a few funny things about my own cheap meter... like the melted ends, when I had it set to measure DC voltage and stuck into a wall outlet.

I like Fluke multimeters myself. The 77 will do pretty much anything you'll probably ever need.

Thanks
Cheaper is definitely better. I'm sure I will fry a few before I figure out how to use it.

Tip
When working on bike/car wiring, I use a trickle charger instead of the battery to test most functions. It won't run blinker relays, but will light all lights, and works to see if switches work. Of course it won't turn a starter.
But if you have a short, it won't let the magic smoke escape from the wires.

Not on a Fluke, or at least the 2 I own it wouldn't.

So you would feel fully confident letting Tooykloma borrow it to learn with?

Yeah you did Matt. This is an odd problem though. That harness was gone through from front to back at least 6 times and was perfect until this morning. The engine runs, the stator charges at 14.4 volts, all the lights work except the headlamp. And of course the tank bag wiring. I hope this solves it once and for all. I am NOT looking forward to doing this TWICE. Once removing the one from Larry's bike and then removing and re-installing the one on my bike. Yeesh
