walked out to my bike after work today, noticed a small puddle of oil.

think to myself, you know Ive had to add oil once or twice since I changed it in dec, I had attributed it to the racing synthetic oil that I bought on sale, thinking it was using more than normal.

ride home, after some errands.

remove bash plate, and bottom engine guard, oil dripping from oil filter.

its not even hand tight, not even snug.

I put a wrench on it, and it turned almost 2 complete revolutions before it felt snug.

so I guess I only hand tightened it last time I changed the oil.

wow, ive changed oil in many vehicles over the years, ive never had an oil filter loose before.

last oil change was in december or January, so its been 8 months of nearly daily riding, and not a catastrophic leak.

thats good to know actually.

anyway...

100 paper towels later, im bolting back the bits of engine guard.

May that Krautcycle is vibrating as much as the Katooms now that you have a few years and miles on it.

I still think that better then the opposite. Let the dealership change the oil in the diesel truck back before my trip month. Then went to change the oil a while ago and drained the pan and went to remove the filter.
No could do. I know I am one handed an all but that was rediculous. I don't ever think a filter should be that tight that you can not break it free with a filter wrench.

It is hard to remove ( without the proper tool)

its in a cavity, not much room around it, the first oil change I did on the bike I speared a screwdriver thru it and unscrewed it.

I bought some tools that fit... about 3 months ago..

so maybe I was thinking err on the side of loose next time...

either way, its all back together, I wiped down the places the oil was peeking out of.

Ill watch it.

makes be feel better though, it was that and not using it, like I inititally expected.

Gus, did you get you some planter boxes yet?

yep.

years ago, wife had a ford escort, we were in a hurry and leaving on a trip, it wa raining ( we had no garage then.. hell we still dont)

I paid $25 for a quickee lube place to change the oil.

some time later, I went to change the oil, and like you, nope, no way in hell to unscrew that filter.

I drove right back down there, with the reciept, and said " Hey guys do you remember me?"

haha

made them break it loose and put it back hand tight.
went home and finished the change.

cant really blame them, those guys are paid so meagerly, they cant really be expected to care.. but

yeah I do them all myself now, its a pita, but I know its done right.
well, most of the time, on the cars at least.

Stop using your left hand to tighten the filter.

This is year four in a row for me. Hard to miss it once you have been.
