Riding again after a serious accident
My friend John, a serious BMW, Iron Butt, riding to work rider lost his leg 14 months after a serious motorcycle accident. During that time he had 33 surgical and medical procedures to try and save the leg, was off work, spent time in a nursing home and finally after a life threatening infection lost the leg.
But you can't keep some riders down and he has decided to ride again and has acquired a 1983 BMW R100 RS with a sidecar. And he is going to ride it home over 1000 miles. I posted about his trip on my blog, Scooter in the Sticks, on a post called REVISITING RISK: THE ACCIDENT if you want to see pictures of some of the downside and upside. Supposedly he is on the road today so I will have to wait until he gets back to Pennsylvania from Florida... Unless someone here sees him on the way! |

Update!
John left West Palm Beach, Florida in the rain on Tuesday and made it to Orlando. He is taking secondary roads the whole way home to Pennsylvania.
He made it to Jacksonville the second day and his wife thought he might get to Asheville, North Carolina today. And the rain should be gone for the remainder of the trip. She wasn't sure how he felt about riding with a sidecar but he said the hack with a roof keeps his gear dry. |

That is truly inspiring. Things like that help us remember that our little problems only seem major.

Dangit@! I would have tagged along for a short while had I known. I live in the area. I could have at least waved or something. Best wishes on his trip.

That's awesome.
Cool too to see that shirt he's wearing during physio... makes me think he has a great attitude, and makes my sh***y day at work seem pretty trivial, love it when that happens. Perspective is a wonderful thing.
