Day Seven: Part Two... S'all good at Alfonsina's
After a few more miles of dirt road, we saw the turn to Gonzaga Bay marked by the welcome site of a functioning Pemex. A guy on a KTM EXC pulled up behind me and we chatted for a while. They'd been riding dirt down from the border and were gassing up for an excursion across the mountains. They were travelling very light and were headed for some technical stuff.
We rolled down the short dirt road to the bay, flanked by two dirt airstrips which somehow I totally failed to notice on the way in. ![]() It wasn't immediately obvious where Alfonsina's was. We got to the end of the road and I could tell this place did not suck. ![]() That's one of the airstrips right there: ![]() We were lucky to secure a room. Despite arriving before the guys we'd met on the way into San Felipe, the place was busy. We only needed one night and that helped our case. We arrived at around 12:30pm... what to do for the rest of the day.... ![]() After a week of being on the road I wanted to chill out for just half a day. Their stock of Pacifico was much depleted... ![]() Tacos de Pescado! (Mucho gusto) ![]() Did I mention the beach? ![]() ![]() BetaTrialsRider and crew arrived later in the day. They managed to secure a room after a lone guy on a KLR was turned away. I guess they were going to drink more. We hung out for a while and talked motorbikes, and travel and stuff. And we drank beer. I tried to explain Larryboy's vacation rules to Crashy. This place was perfect. ![]() This was a good place to forget about the world. I decided that if I was ever on the run and the policia were about to catch up with me, I think I'd head here for one last perfect afternoon. ![]() The water was cool and the sand was warm. But there is always time for a little mischief... ![]() ![]() We drank some more beers and ate some more. It was great to have nowhere to go and nothing to do. Not quite sure what I did to mess up this late afternoon photo but I kind of like the way it turned out. ![]() Crashy and I dined with a group of four Americans we had been talking with through the day. They'd flown into the airstrip, a nice way to see Baja, I would say. Fuel was as much of a concern for them as it was for us although I think we had been granted a better feel for the place by traveling through it, tasting the dust under the warm sun instead of hopping between landing fields. One of the people in our dinner group was one of original six developers of the Apple Mac. A little Tequila and then time for bed. One of the best days of my life. Skip to Next Day

Day 8: Bahia a Bahia
Sunrise came easily at the Bahia San Luis Gonzaga.
![]() I wandered along the cool, wet sand, alone in my thoughts except for the sea birds fishing in the surf. ![]() A small boat arrived from across the bay, it's arrival seemed to unthaw the tiny resort as people emerged and began the business of the day. Off-roading and race stickers everywhere. The races are a big deal. ![]() It was time to pack, gear up and evaporate from this paradise. As I pulled my act together, I was approached by a fellow called Antonio from San Diego who was vacationing with his family. On a previous trip with his teenage son, they had ventured down on a quad and a CR450X on dirt-roads. He seemed surprised that I rode my XR down from San Francisco. The dirt road was in better condition as we raced south. Apart from some sand near Alfonsina's it was fast, hard-pack and washboard. I kept pushing my speed up on the fast sections... 3rd gear... 4th gear... I was running at around 65 for a while until I bounced the front wheel of a few rocks and dialed the velocity down a little. ![]() (xymotic) The road to Coco's Corner was a real cactus garden. ![]() As we neared Coco's, an Ocotillo branch slapped my right mirror and popped out the glass onto my jacket. Great... no mirrors at all now. ![]() After a little while we pulled into Coco's Corner. I confess I'd been looking forward to this for a long time but had still didn't know what to expect. When we arrived, Coco was entertaining a group of three travellers from Canada. A little later, BetaTrialsGuy and his crew arrived and we had ourselves a mini-party. ![]() (xymotic) Coco's place is wall-to-wall Baja history. The man himself is doing well. He has a neat solar power setup and a radio to keep in touch with his neighbors. ![]() ![]() ![]() It was fun to thumb through the visitor's book. I saw entries by Gaspipe and Jonz... but we made our own mark. ![]() Crashy added the steeker. Time for a photo before heading off into the warming day. ![]() (xymotic) By the time we rejoined highway, I had lost the bolt that secured my left bark buster to the bar. A little emergency duck tape and we back on our way. Guess I didn't use blue loctite there after all. ![]() The road was lined with cactus and Boojum. This is what I had come to see. ![]() After a little road-side discussion we decided that we liked having gas more than our fear of buying gas at a restaurant so we doubled-back and began the difficult process of negotiating for gas. OK, I confess, it was easy and the people were nice. ![]() (xymotic) As we were gearing up a couple of the young women who worked in the restaurant came to the door with a tiny little girl around toddler age who was waving at us with a coy but curious demeanor. It was possibly the photo of trip... but Crashy decapitated them. ![]() Mexico. Does. Not. Suck. ![]() (xymotic) With gas in our tanks it was time to hit the road for Bahia de Los Angeles. We pounded out the miles on the hot, windy slab and rolled into town after what seemed like an eternity. We actually struggled to find the heart of the town itself, it's really small with one main street that parallels the beach. Crashy spoke to a dude named Diaz about fixing his shock but it was a no go. We followed the GPS of doom on a mad-cap dirt-road route along the bay. Past a cemetery and then into hidden vados of extreme peril. I braked hard between the first and second one, once I recognized the looming danger. I skidded into the bottom in third-gear, up-on-the pegs with white knuckles before the XR sprang out the other side. I down-shifted and carried on as if nothing happened. After a few minutes it was obvious this wasn't where we wanted to be. After some interactions with locals we found a good place to eat an early dinner of Tacos Dorados and Mexican Burritos. Before hunting out Raquel y Larry's on the beach. ![]() With a room secured we went back out to explore a little. The connecting road was sandy in patches... I think we both had interesting moments but were too cool to own-up. ![]() ![]() ![]() After a little exploring it was time for a shower, some wifi and beer. It was nice to be back in contact with the world at least for a few hours. In contact but at arms length. The world on our terms. I slept well that night. Skip to Next Day

I've got a two week road-trip from my hometown in Britain to the Isle of Man to see the TT races in June so I think I've about exhausted the time I can take off this year.
