The engine was running too! Battery was dead when I pulled the bike out of the garage. Jumped it and took off... between that and having some heated gear on today, I didn't want to turn it off with no one around to get another jump.

New tag...

Across the road from White Elephant Antique shop is Milford Rd. Take it to the end and you will be here...

Ali is hidden to the left of the small evergreen to the right of my rear wheel.

Under the cigar tube.

Ali said, after spending some time at a technical utility facility, "You know, pioneers and innovators often do quite well. Samuel Morse's telegraph was successful, Thomas Edison made out all right with his electric light bulb; Marconi's wireless caught on; and the Wright brothers' airplane changed the world.

"But sometimes, the pioneers, the innovators, don't face a favorable outcome."

I asked, "Examples, please!"

"Well, in this market area," he continued, "Before any Wal-Marts or CostCos or Sam's Club's or the like, there was, 'The BEST Company!' The BEST Company was a discount department store, early in with the concept, but . . . defunct now.

"Similarly, before Borders Books and Barnes & Noble, there was, 'Crown Books." Same story. Before Auto Zone and Advance Auto and the deluge of other discount auto parts and accessories stores, there was Trak Auto. R.I.P. Before there was a CVS on every corner, there was Dart Drug. Before Best Buy, we had Circuit City. Get the picture?"

"Well, I guess so," I replied," but what has this accounting of pioneers-who-didn't-survive got to do with our next tag?"

Ali said, "I want to go to the site of the local pioneer home improvement supplies store, that pre-dated Home Depot, Lowe's, and all the rest!"

"You mean . . . , " I stammered.

Ali exclaimed, "Yes! It's now a supermarket-cum-international-money-order emporium, but it's on a Drive named for the store where, 'Happy Homeowner' used to shop. There's a VRE station on the Drive across from the original Plaza, but the station is named for another major intersecting Road."

Ali reposes, beneath a tell-tale stick-letter "A," between a fire plug sign reading, "# 23" (I think), and a retaining wall of a prominent Washington, DC roadway crossing DC/MD/VA jurisdiction, at the site of one of several pioneering home improvement supply stores.

Alas, Ali's Requiem for the store-in-question appears correct; from Wikipedia:
Quote:
Bankruptcy and demise[edit]

After several rounds of store closings, the [store] filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on June 11, 1999, but the reorganization failed. Later that year, in September 1999, [the store's] assets were liquidated, including its 117 remaining stores.

I'll be heading out in about an hour. Get that tag posted up. Preferably not in the RLD

Yesterday was a perfect evening - it was warm so for the first time in a while I rode to school and during class randomly checked forum for tags. Ali was nearby!
Ali was quite happy to meet with me again, though a bit confused by my Movember stache....

I took my son along for the tag, we didn't have much time, so tag is somewhat near my house and previous tag, and very close to one of the bigger high schools in the area.

Ali is under the last post on the right.

Now you see me

Now you don't.

Obligatory bike shot with that support pole in the background.

Nice tag. I see that you were joined by the pumpkin brigade! Outstanding. . .. Wonder what the maintenance intervals are on that ride?

On the tag, while I can find some fairly large high schools near the prior tag, I'm not sure where the common area parking is, so I'm going to ask the audience for another clue. . ..

Intervals are terribly frequent! Need to raise that seat every few months.:o

Clue: the lake by which Ali is resting is named after a commander-in-chief for the 13 colonies during the actions at the start of the French and Indian War (17541765) .

Way to go, rgc1248!

Chilly ride, I shouldn't wonder!

Could that be a Gerbing's cord languishing against your motorcycle?
