Went to my local Academy sporting goods store this morning for ammo. The only .22lr they had was CCI mini mags in the 100 round pack. Price was $6 or $7 so I bought one of those, 100 round pack of .40, and a 20 round box of .223. Before the store opened the manager came out with a list of inventory and took requests so that when we got inside they would just hand us what we requested.

Had an interesting chat with him. He said that they are receiving the same, if not more amount of ammo they have been receiving since before the craze. Their buyers are purchasing all they can, but the demand is just so high that they can't keep up. Basically if people would stop stashing the stuff, this wouldn't be happening. I mentioned that I am the type to have some ammo on hand, but I usually stop at the store on my way to the range to pick up ammo, or whenever I plan on shooting. But now because I never know when I will be able to find the stuff, I have to start stocking up. He mentioned they had this problem a few years ago with .380. They just couldn't keep the stuff on the shelf. After awhile the sales started dropping, and they had inventory again. He said it took a few months though, I can imagine it will be the same here.

You think I'm using birdshot

I think 3 ball XXX shot or .45 long colt or 3" 1/4 or 1/5 oz hollowpoint rifled slugs I use will do the job. The slugs have a muzzle velocity of 1800fps. I really don't think penetration is an issue. Look up the Snake Slayer's vids on youtube before you pass judgement.

Also the 2-1/2 or 3" PDX Defender round is pretty sweet

Love it....I think I am the only one on the planet that does not like the 10/22. I have an OLD one and it still shoots great.

1800fps out of a 28" barrel maybe. what's yours? 1"? tests have shown to be around 600fps if you're lucky with a "snake slayer" (why do you think they call it that?) the gun is useless unless you're 5' or closer. yeah i get it, most defensive situations happen at that range but i would rather not sell myself short in an unknown situation.

most of the tests you probably watched were from a judge, not a derringer.

"also the 2-1/2 or "3 PDX Defender round is pretty sweet"

I would rather carry a caliber that is proven to have reliable penetration than to have one that "is pretty sweet".

oh wait, this is a rimfire thread...

I have a Judge too, another baby gun I reckon. I appreciate your concern for my safety. I think I'll stop riding now too.

I also have an old 60(doesn't everyone). The only problem I ever had was the bolt buffer cracked after about a bazillion rnds.
The new one is a better material and I never expect to have to change it again.

I just wish I could find some .22 ammo locally...

Always liked those. I love tube magazines and the clean look. I passed on one about a year ago. ($125) I think it was stamped "Western Auto" 99% sure it's the same firearm.

Your not the only one. My friend has a 10/22 and I've shot it twice. I think the 10/22 is a POS in comparison to the Marlin. I'm sure everyone will say the 10/22 is a great gun but in comparisson to the Marlin it doesn't feel or shoot as nice to me. It does cost more though and I'm sure you can dump money into it to make it better. Bone stock I still like the Marlin best.

a 100 yard group out of my 10/22. yeah, not great but the shots were in quick succession after i just installed my scope. on bags, or in a rig, i believe i could get 1 moa out of it.... and before you say i'm crazy, there isn't a piece on my 10/22 that's stock except for the receiver.

Not taking it anymore personal that it seemed to be intended.

And gun control is a tight 5 shot pattern. Nicely done.

Speaking of Marlin...

So I've got a Marlin Bolt action .22 and I've been trying to fit it with a scope...since the receiver is grooved, one would think that this would be easy. One would be SO wrong.

Curved top receiver - rings are mostly flat top...also don't have clearance for the 40mm objective scope that is sold as a ".22 scope".

Anyone have hits for a set of rings for a .22 with a decent fit for this? I've tried Burris and now have the Redfield 'see thru' rings - which I had to file down to fit even a bit - I hope they don't pop off in use! I had to file the cross bolt to allow the clamp to fit down into the grooves.

The receiver is not tapped at all, since it's grooved.

Anyone have any suggestions?

You need tip-off mounts, there is no cross bolt for grooved receivers. Probably gettem at your local Wally World et al.
