There's a bit of a learning curve, but it's worth the effort. You can download shonkymaps and tracks4australia as well for free, and make them part of your mapset. the limiting factor is the number of map tiles you can have in a mapset, currently it's 2025, but I tried that number last week and got a corrupted mapset, so I went down to approx. 1960 map tiles and it works great, it generated a 1.6Gb mapset with 3 different mapsets in it, very handy!
I was mainly wondering how much the garmin topo set looks like OZTopo.

I'm in Kambah, how bout you... Bit busy this week.. In the process of replacing wall in my daughters bedroom with sliding cavity doors, hopefully get it done today then need to paint next weekend. In between need to do oil change/service, install high guard kit (new break lines and bleed) and put new tyres on theKTM

If I can get it sorted then Delegate, Cancer council ride and maybe Newnes

I'm in Kambah too.
Sadly I'm working for Delegate and the Cancer Council rides, a pity as I'd like to do both. I'm not sure about Newnes.
I think the routable tracks you talked about in the Brindies will all be gazetted roads, whereas the other tracks are logging roads and firetrails that aren't gazetted, and that's the difference. Most comprehensize insurance policies will cover you for gazetted roads, but not the other trails.
If you need shonky or t4a I have them here, easy to deliver on USB stick.

I was talking to the guys down at JA and they seemed to think that the Garmin Topo didn't include as many tracks as shonky or other equivalents. Mind you, this was only on a test section of Fraser Island, so other areas of Oz need to be tested.

Just bought a 60CSx on the weekend. Still trying to work out which will be the best map soln. I like the idea of one mapset with all the tracks that is also routable. Then again, maybe I'll just buy City Navigator for the easy stuff then setup way point and just let loose in the bush. Too many freakin options! (and they all cost $)

Yep, Topo Australia (Garmins topo map) is a little light on on Fraser Island tracks.
Both OZtopo and Tracks4Australia have noticebly more tracks on Fraser.

Don't believe that this is a real indicator of the Topo Australia coverage as in other areas it seems reasonable
.

I went with the Garmin Topo as I didn't want to have to buy City Explorer and OZ topo. I figured I would start with the Garmin Topo and if it sucked buy City explorer and look at shonky etc (the Garmin came with T4A on a Memory card but I havn't tried it). SO far around Canberra the GArmin Topo on the 60CS is better than my in car Navman and it seems to have lots of tracks and trails. I think bang for buck its the best option and I wouldn't bother with City Explorer. I may add some more tracks stuff though if I find it lacking but at this time I think its probably the best value for money if you are going to buy one mapset.

i have been playing with gps's over the past 6 years and i have found the best set up "for me" is a "HTC touch crusie" load oziexplorer on it and put in all my custom maps then the inbuilt gps tells me where i am on any particular map.
load in my set wpts and route then i just follow. its just great.

Wicked eTrex Vista HCx

Got the Garmin Vista and OzTopo maps on CD. Loaded it all on PC and with a bit of routing around got it working well. Planned our Tassie trip on the PC use the mapping software and Google earth and the whole thing worked a treat. It the GPS found some dodgee little trail entrances that the eye wouldn't see. Only issue was the map said the trail was there on one occassion as did Google earth but it had closed and re-routed. Figured it out and downloaded the GPS and ws interesting to see we where right on the track but forestry Tas had changed it.

This is the ADV gathering at Delegate. The pink line is where we wanted to go and the black dotted is actual. All part of the adventure navigating...lol. The doubled up line is Saturday into Delegate (right side) and Sunday along Browns camp road to Mt Tingaringy...eventually.

I went down the same route as Michl and so far after some stuffing about I have finally gotten the software to work . The supplied version of Mapsource has a fault with the wizard and needed the latest version update. As for BaseCamp I'm a bit iffy on that due to some crashing problems, but if you want to do some different angle views it'd do the job.
Thus far Garmin's software has stayed true to form and is a PITA but if you want turn by turn with topo it's the only one for Garmin GPS's (so far).

Difference between OZtopo and T4A

Still trying to get a handle on the OZtopo and TOPO Australia differences

I'm confused (again) Burnie.
Looking at my CD cover with OZtopo on it, it says that OZtopo is a mapping product ...... comprised of two mapsets Tracks4Australia PRO and 20m Contours.

What are you referring to when you say
OZtopo uses roads and tracks data from Map Data Sciences/PSMA
and
T4A and Shonky use Geoscience Australia data

You have OZtopo v1. Current version is OZtopo V2.1.
Much more extensive roads and tracks in OZtopo V2.1. You can upgrade for $99.

OZtopo V3 is expected September-ish

Difference between OZtopo and T4A

The OZtopo v1.0 CD cover says that OZtopo is comprised of two mapsets T4A PRO and 20m contours.
Therefore how can OZtopo and T4A use different data sources?

OZtopo v1 used the Track4Australia PRO roads and tracks layer (data from Geoscience Australia)

OZtopo v2 uses roads and tracks data from Mapdata sciences/PSMA
