Are you guys running "line out" sound page setting when using the speaker/power cord?

Update on the canoe/kayak mode:

the built in battery seems to be holding out ok. with everything turned down and no xm antenna installed the unit says I got about 8 hours? I've gone 4.5 so far and it says there's plenty left. for my 3 day race I might be able to go on just one battery on the tougher first day, then charge it up overnight for the next day which is gonna be another tough one, another overnight charge and then ready for the shorter third day. I do have two batteries coming though for some of my other unsupported multi day adventures. I will have to try out that 9 volt system if I go out for a week or so .......
I also got a garmin 512 memory card coming in so I can load topo maps .....
so far I've discovered that seeing the mph on the screen is a really nice thing to keep up my speed. with the brightness turned all the way down I can still see the screen. I've have the xm antenna with me, just in case ...... I've also used the 478 while hiking and that worked out pretty good! I did some adventuring off the trail and by setting waypoints every so often was able to vector back and meet up with the trail, and that's with out using the map and compass, cool ..... I have an older style small camera bag that fit's my gps and camera in it and was comfortable with the strap over my shoulder. I could fast walk and jog with this on, nice. back to the canoe, I have a small wooden strip going across from rail to rail and bungied into place. the gps is screwed to it with a watch strapped to the same board. It's out of the way of the paddle and spray but in a good position to see it. I'll have to get a pic of this ....... speeds: I can max out at about 6.4 mph but can hold 5.5ish for awhile, 5.0 for longer distances, and 4.5 I can relax with.

as I just discovered .....
the AC Pwr Supply is NOT waterproof! (dang it!)

I left it all out in the rain .....
the gps is fine but the ac pwr supply was full of water.
I'll try and let it dry out and see what happens.
Presently it's not working.
If worst comes to worst I'll cut off the "brick"
and have another pwr cord.
I'll try using the dc car cable with a battery charger
and see how that will work on the porch next to the house.
I don't get enough signal inside the house, not all day long anyway.

I cut the garmin "brick" off and replaced it with a unit from Radio Shack and it's been working great. I got my extra garmin batteries in and noticed that sometimes that the batteries would not charge up all the way. What seemed to work was to run down the batteries until the 478 died, then plug it back into AC so it could charge up again. The data card topo map installation went ok, the second time, as the first time I tried to fill it up and that didn't go so well. Then I went with the bare mins of the map sections that I needed and that went quickly and smoothly.

I re ran the route that took me 12 hours in the big yellow beast and did it in only 9 hours with the new Placid Boat Works RapidFire. I took off at 7am and ran in a complete white out of fog for 2 hours going down the the first lake. The 478 got me through it oh so nicely! I just let the arrow point me the way ..... it was pretty eery paddling blindly in the silent pea soup and if it wasn't for the 478 I'd have been paddling in circles with no idea what was happening ......

Check out the "Marine" packages. Much cheaper and still give you the info you need.

I got the "master mariner" package but will downgrade to either sailor or the fisherman package. I also understand you can "turn off" your service for the season and turn it back on again when you need it, though I haven't yet tried that.

For where I was and what I was doing, xm wx was perfect is scheduling around storms (which as much as there was) . On my trip back there was a front up and down the eastern seaboard, virgina, tenn, etc., so I decided to head west instead of going down to New Orleans and punch thru to clearer skies. dang, how cool is that?

I have my 478 sitting right in front of me while I work listening to the xm radio, but the weather page is up and showing me the new approaching fronts ..... portable real time weather info ..... too cool ......

I still need a dead battery though ....
I want to try out a mod,
and don't want to destroy a perfectly good 20 dollar battery.

You are in luck! I read this post yesterday and today I received my pre-owned 478 which has a dead battery. It is yours as long as you post details on the mod.

Looks like I will be trying out one of those $20 batteries.
