great bike and one of my favorite parts of the country. I have the best adventures when I go to pickup and ride/drive vehicles back home.

You guys will get a laugh out of this side story to the trip.....

For the first 200 miles I rode this bike with ear plugs. After a fill-up, I decided to chunk the plugs, as I wanted to hear the wind noise and the engine. The first 10 miles, I was totally freaked!!!! I was picking up a noise from the engine that I had not heard when I 'test rode' the bike. It sounded like a rattle coming from the top end. I listened from every angle I could and at different RPM's as I rode.....but the bike seemed to be just plugging along....so I kept riding it.

Upon getting home to Colorado, my 17 year old and I unloaded the bike and he begged me to take it for a quick spin. I agreed, but I said....let me do a 5 minute ride first, as I want to listen for something. I did this little test ride with no helmet.

Immediately!!!!!!......I noticed the rattling sound that I had heard all the way through New Mexico.

And.....it was coming from the head light!!!! Boy did I feel stupid. I was really freaked that I was going to have to do 20 hours of work on the engine and a couple hundred bucks in parts. The engine runs pristine, thankfully!!!!! Now I just have to fix the headlight rattle.

Anyway, yeah.....endeavoring to dive in to a long distance ride on a bike that is unproven.....is a little unnerving!!! Heck, just part of the adventure!!!!! By the way, before leaving Chandler, I changed the oil (new filter) and I cleaned, lubed up the chain and checked all the nuts and bolts.

If you only knew....."Hey Dad, are you going to Phoenix for work next week?" "Hey Dad, the weekend weather is supposed to be really nice." Hey Dad, you suppose Jason is getting tired of the bike sitting in his garage in Phoenix?"

For 6 weeks I heard the most creative stuff I have ever heard.

Next week, Tyler will complete the test for his permit and we can start riding together. By the way, if anyone has a good suggestion for a Motorcycle Course in Colorado Springs for both my boys, I'm all ears. For the next several months, I am going to keep both of them in their permit so that highway riding is only with dear 'ole Dad.

After that long ride you know the motor is good. Congrats on the new bike. If I may add something wear some knee/shin pads under your jeans it will save you from impact and rash. Ben

good find

great bike to go with the Strom. The smart riders know when to not ride. Good call on the truck. There is nothing to prove to anyone. Just stay safe.

I see. So the plan was for them to have the same exact bike (I like the older one, matches my old XL250).
Good on you!

Final Chapter.....

So here is the rest of the story.....

Having my nephew's truck in Colorado and needing to get it back to him in Albuquerque, I came up with a pretty good plan.

Yes, that is the same white truck from two weeks ago, but instead of an XL600 in the back, it is a V-Strom.

Leaving Albuquerque this morning.

Here is my route.....
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&sour...66,9.84375&z=7

A quick stop in Santa Fe and a ride in the downtown area...the plaza.

Riding up the canyon between Santa Fe and Taos....yep, that's the Rio Grande.

The Rio Grando Gorge with Taos and Mt. Wheeler in the background.

Of course, a lunch stop at Michael's Kitchen is a non-negotiable!!!! Green Chicken Enchiladas, Spanish Rice and Beans!

Ridin up the Red River Canyon toward the town of Red River.

87558.......Red River, NM

87710.....Angel Fire, NM

In very lonely parts of New Mexico....way out in BFE....this is what happens!

Outside of Walsenburg....headed home on the fast lane.

And finally......Pike's Peak....which means, I am nearly HOME!!! 415 miles of great riding on the Strom!
