I went for a couple hour ride the other day, then stopped at the gym on my way home, parking right outside the window. I was wearing my high viz jacket, riding pants, boots, and was carrying my helmet and gloves in addition to my gym bag when I came inside.

Some guy in the gym came running over and said, Wow, you must live in Alaska or something!
I looked at him and said, I used to, why?
He says, Only someone who lives up North would be dressed like that!
I told him I had been riding all day.
His response, All day, on a bicycle?

Rode the sv to work today, nothing unusual in that, however pretty much the first thing anyone said to me was

'what are you doing riding that in this weather?'

I could understand it if it was snowing but it was 12 degrees and cloudy

yep, forgot you Americans do it different

I'm the same, liners don't go in until the first overnight frost, by then the sv will be tucked away for the winter and the Dakar will take over the winter commute. Need to change to tkc's soon.

I agree, but just like many other hobbies...takes all types.

I've got the thermal liner in my mesh jacket now and I'm thinking about picking up some warmer gloves - 50 degrees seems a bit chilly after summer here in Vegas

The joke is that Harley riders think they are rugged individualists!

And you wonder why these people can't see a motorcycle in traffic? The possibility simply does not occur to them.

Yeah, we all have our preferred riding gear. All of us ATGATT clowns look alike and it's true, the guys I ride with would be critical if I wore blue jeans,a t shirt and fingerless gloves, which I did for years. I don't mind that kind of peer pressure when it leads me to act in a positive way.

What you wear, or don't wear, makes little difference to me. However, if you choose not to wear the proper safety gear because you are worried about what your friends will think, then yes, you are an idiot.

Then again, if the only reason you wear ATGATT is to be like all other ADV'ers, then you are an idiot.

The reason to wear the gear is because on a motorcycle, YOU are the crumple zone.

Parking at the local DQ, as my son and I were getting off the bike (ST1300).
Guy getting in his car says, "Shouldn't that be a Harley?"
I turned while I was laughing and asked "why?"
"Just giving you shit", he replies.
No shit taken, but gave me a good laugh !

I wear it to stay comfortable.

Cool when it's hot... Warm when it's cold... Dry when it's raining...

Sure it has padding and is abrasion resistant to save my skin in the event of a get-off but that is NOT my primary consideration for wearing gear.

For me it is of the utmost importance to stay focused. To that end I need to be comfortable and dressed for the conditions I happen to be riding in.

If there could be just one that was devoid of idiots it would be grand though, wouldn't it?

We all have someone in that category, did not mean anything negative towards you.

I would like my wife to wear a full face helmet, but she would feel claustrophobic in it. She is a nurse and wont wear it.

Someday...

Physics majors kill me....

I just got back home from a stint overseas. I bought Misses Donkeys a Ural while I was gone. So when I got back this weekend, I was anxious to discover sidecar-ing.

This morning I took it out and around the neighborhood to get acquainted. I stopped at the gas station down the street to be greeted by two deaf physics majors, who obviously thought I couldn't hear them. We'll call them Earl and Cletus.

Cletus: That thar's a fuuunnnny looookin motor-sickle.

Earl: I reckon he has a hard time keepin that upright, being all uneven and unbalanced.

Cletus: Well, I's thinks its got three wheels?

Earl: No way, you can't steer anything with three wheels...

Cletus: Yeah, you're probly right. Wunder if its legal....

Earl: Dunno, but I bet its hard to ride that thing, havin' to lean so much and all...

Thank God for pay at the pump. I don't think I could have kept a straight face if I had to walk by those two.
