SF Bay Area to Cabo, its not the destination but the journey

Writing this from San Felipe. In some coffee shop across from Hotel Costa Azul.

Last summer I got a GSA with hopes of one day got to South America, Alaska and points beyond. So I figured Baja would be a good first trip. While I plan to make it Cabo, its only the final destination. Never been but not sure I'll like it. I have had my fill of "destinations" where people arrive in an aluminum tube for a week or two of whatever....

Final note. It took me 2 days to get to San Diego, mainly cause I stop to visit my younger daughter in San Luis Obispo, she's a sophmore at the college.

Saturday AM. OK so here I am ready to go

.

There I go:

Sunday evening I arrive in San Diego. I head twoard the Tecate crossing in hopes of finding a motel. Gets a bit dicey, so I go back to Pacific Beach and stay the night.

So here is the first day of travel:

I took crashmasters advice and did the compadre trail (?):

Somewhere between Tecate and Ojos Negros:

More later heading to Alfonsina.....

Sorry for the delay....

No internet in Bay of LA nor on the way down loretomex 5. I'm in now. I'll update late tonight or early tomorrow.

Just a bit of a tease: I got stuck in the sand to the rear hub, then the bike slipped over after I got off. I was about 3 miles from allfonsinas. But I was unstuck and going in about 5 minutes.

Not that I'm dumb, but sometimes I lack common sense.

Last time I did dirt, any dirt was 25-30 years ago, on small machines not a 600 pound moose.

SO of course I'm going to Baja and do some dirt. On trip planning most gave me a heads up. Practice, get knobbies, and don't go alone. Well none of that worked out.

So where were we.

I did the Compadres trail, and see a group of MX bikes, may have been a training camp for kids. Then I see a group of 4 suspicious cars hauling ass almost knocked me off the road....

The bike is sliding and shifting, and I remember, just gas it. Well it worked. Never dumped the big ole moose but I thought I might. But I just gassed it. Oh yeah last piece of advice I ignored like an idiot. Did not drop pressure.

SO when I finally hit Mex 3, I feel great. Now maybe this is easy dirt, but its still frickin baja dirt. I feel like celebrating. I pull into a town looking to brag and celebrate, but this is the only guy around, and I have no biscuits.

SO Instead I just go in here and get a coke. I had a big old smile on my face. The must have though I was some stupid gringo....

SO I head down Mex 3. Right before it hits 5, into San Felipe is a big military check point. They searched everything. Nice guys, though.

I get to San Felipe and check into this place. Overpriced 70 US, I should have stayed across the street 35 US,

I get a Negro Modelo at a bar and walk around. Ticky tacky tourist town, but I bet its a gas when its jumpin.

I eat at place called Chuiys (sp?) and have Pineapple Shrimp, it was good. When I first saw it I thought it would be to sweet but it was not.

Next morning I got up and took some sunrise pics:

This Guy wants his picture taken

Tomorrow, off to Alfosinas, Cocos and Bay of LA....

It's okay if you didn't follow the advice people gave you...... as long as you follow just one.... "Have a good time!"

San Felipe to Bahia de LA

So day 2 of me in the dirt with this big ole moose.

So I head south out of San Felipe. Its fairly nice highway and paved until Campo Castillio. Then out there lots of road construction. SO the next 70 or so miles is a rocky road.

And washboard, and just crap, but thats why I wanted to ride it. If you decide to ride it make sure you loctite you bolts. Never went down, but took it easy.

It took me several hours to get to Alfonsinas.

STUCK IN THE SAND:
As I approached Alfonsinas from the North, the GPS, make it look like I passed Alfonsinas. So I head back a bit and head into the camp a bit north of it. When I realize my mistake I head what I think is a road towards it, which stops at a fence. I then try a U turn, and the sand got deep fast. Boom up to the hub, stuck. OK, so almost all problems can be solved. Course I ain't pulling that big ole moose out. I get off bike and it tips onto its side. Is this considered dropping the bike?

I just laugh. OK so its ADV.com, so I got to get a picture. But I look up and about 300 yards up the road near the camp entrance is a vehicle. I start waving. They finally head down towards me. Its a hummer filled with about 10 military guys. At least 1 officer, mid 40s. He got a big kick out of it. They help me get the bike up and out. Total time 5 minutes. I wanted to take a picture but they did not want any part of it, they quickly escorted me out of the area.

SO about 3 miles down the road the entrance to Alfonsinas beach.

I am hungry and tired its 2:00 pm.

So I'm wondering who did this?

No food porn, I was hungry. However the best fish tacos, to date anyhow.

There are 3 Canadians from Vancouver. Trucked KLRs down to SD then came across the border. This was there off day. Not sure if they post there but maybe. Thats them in the background.

I think about staying, but I want to get south. So nourished and hydrated its off to Cocos.

The ride to Cocos was fun sliding and sand surfin on the moose. Came close to eat'n crap a couple times but managed to keep it up. Just gas it , and by all means don't stick your leg out to break the fall of that big beast.

I arrive at Cocos. He wants me to stay but like I say I want to get south. I bought some cat food in San Diego and gave it to him, and had a coke. He really is a very nice guy. I think next year I will go down and paln one night in one these campers:

He has a really nice panty/thong collection:

And what is this thing. IS this how he gets the panties?

More Cocos:

After Cocos, its 10 more miles to 1, on the same kind of road,

Once I hit the highway its an hour or so to Bay of LA. I arrive in town, ask the first Gringo I see and ask where a good place to stay is. He points me back to where they are and I go there.

Next Post Bay Of LA and beyond to Loretto.

Have a great trip!

Looks like you're having a great time. Don't forget to slow down and enjoy yourself and the people. The baja is an amazing place.

I'm glad to see Coco is back! He was gone in October and it didn't look like he'd been there in quite some time. It looks like lots of new plywood. He must have come back and gone to work fixing up the place.
