Bavaria - Austria - the 2009 rides - #2 Franconia

Hi all,
Next part of the Bavaria - Austria - Series. :-)

Over the easter-weekend we have been back to my roots.
My nickname is Franken - wich means Franconia in English. So let me show my "homeland".

GPX-upload is still not possible - if you like to have the track - PM me.

Some fun and info before we start our report.

Fraconian people speak a very cool dialect. So if you are close to Würzburg on the highway and you ask some native "Where i am" he may answer you "Short before "people read a dry egg" (wich means "Bieblerieder Dreick" - wich is the name of the highway crossing near the town of Biebelried).
May also sound familar to english speaking people if we say "Shower mol hair, do left a eagle" - means "Schau mal her, da läuft ein Igel" -- look here, there is a hedgehog walking).
More you might find here
http://www.deanita.de/franconia_englishspoken.htm

Btw - you all think Munich is a beer city - forget it - upper franconia has the highest destiny of breweries in the world.

More info see here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franconia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oberfranken

So lets start the report.
We passed Munich, took the highway - passed Nürnberg (Nemberch in Dialect).
Some km behind Nürnberg we left the highway and dived into the "Fränkische". (this is like we call this aera - more info here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fr%C3%A4nkische_Schweiz).

On small roads we reached Pottenstein.

Pottenstein - the heart of the Fränkischen Schweiz

closer look

this is like the most valleys look like

We followed the road to Ahorntal (Ohrntol) - Mistelgau (Misslgaa) to Donndorf close to Bayreuth (Bareidh).

In Donndorf we found the first easter well - easter well? Ok - this is what i mean.

easter well in the foreground :-) in the background Schloß Fantaisie. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elisabe...nburg-Bayreuth

We made the last km to Bayreuth and stay the night at my mothers house. (and we got too much to eat) :-)

Next day we started the tour into the "Frankenwald-area". First stop after 3 km at the Richard Wagner opera house at the "green hill" in Bayreuth.

Next stop was Wirsberg - a steam train museum is located there. You also can take a ride with this old trains

not a very good pic, but had no other chance to make a pic here.

We went on to Staffelstein and followed an old "Mountain-race-track" and then we reached Kronach.

a lot traffic in the city

the historic town wall is nearly complete (seldom in germany - WW II bombing)

After some ice cream we went on to Coburg. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coburg). Here the pics

easter wall

city

Tina has to explain the bike. :-) (like always with helmet on)

We left Coburg and followed the GDR border (german democratic republik). We entered the Fankenwald Höhenstraße wich is a road with nice curves and great views. We passed the Köteltalsperre (a dam to get trinkable water for the region).

fire fighters know the material used for this seat

Through Naila - Helmbrechts we went into the Fichtelgebirge - Bayreuths wintersport area. Was still cold there

Still some snow and ice left.

70 km back to Bayreuth - again too much too eat at "Mothers". :-)

Next day we went into the "Fränkische". The famous area between Nürnberg, Bamberg and Bayreuth. Here we go.

First step - to Heinersreuth and Altenplos - here we took the gravel road to the "Waldhütte". (a nice beer garden)

the way we came

Waldhütte

More 5 km on gravel to reach Oberwaiz - passed Donndorf and went on to Mistelbach. Uphill to Gesees and into the next forest to visit the "Rotmain- font".

into the trees ... (this is not finland)

parking near the font

some more gravel road - then we passed Weiglathal (another nice beergarden) and went on to Waischenfeld.

Impressions of Waischenfeld

nice mil

watch it - left of the church

river Wiesent

On we go - passing Breitenlesau (my favourite beergarden - sorry no pics) to the famous "Kathi-Bräu" at Heckenhof.

like always - too much people (ups, what a fault - Tina without helmet)

don't and

no free place

all kind of bikes and all kind of people

We passed Aufsess (4 breweries), on to Holfeld and on to Scheßlitz. Next highlight is Tiefenellern - why? -- Hairpins :-)

but be careful - a lot of police in the area - and speed traps.

and small waterfalls

Next bigger town is Heiligenstadt. And again we found this easter thing.

Party time in the center of Heiligenstadt

some bigger one here

children from local school did the art work

the crown (juwels)

Who eat all the eggs the weeks before?

i like it

my favourite

regional overview

We left Heiligenstadt and went on to Ebermannstadt. Too much traffic there - so back on smaller roads. We reached Bieberbach. And here it is - the biggest in the world (entry in Guiness book of records)

unfortunaly also the biggest crowd.

hand made - self painted - for sure

closer look

wuff

easter bunny school

We left the little town and went down to Egloffstein. We followed the next valley to reach Gössweinstein. Some impressions.

a peaceful one

typical valley (and weekend traffic)

up and down

it's also a great area for freeclimbing

On our way back to Bayreuth we passed Waischenfeld again - don't know why i made so much pics there - but we stoped for another ice cream.

Bridges over Wiesent river

Typical "Fachwerk-Haus".

Last highlight of the day was the road over Neubürg mountain. (a small hill) :-)

history

panorama part 1

Pano part 2

wandering through culture

Art

20 km back to Bayreuth - the day ended - you know how -- too much food at "Mothers".

So last day - we had to go back home. We decided that highway is boring - so we made our way home through Czech republik. (to avoid german highway easter traffic).

First stop we made in Cheb (Eger). (Most Czech Cities have also german names - History?)

Center of Cheb

Center part 2

We went on to Marianske Lazne (Marienbad) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marienbad

Impressions of this nice town

old style

in the center

We left and followed the roads close to the german border. We passed Bor and went direction Domazlice. Very nice small roads - a lot of curves. Nice to ride, nearly no traffic.

We found this.

I have 98 horses, but Tina like this ones more

view

look back where we came

last look at the horses

At Furth im Wald we went back to Germany - need to make some speed to reach home. Passed Cham and Straubing and entered the Highway.

As we passed Munich - at the Olypic stadium - this happens.

50 k

here we made it

Last step - Highway direct. Garmisch - and off at lake Starnberg.

10 km to go. Alps in the background.

So - hope you liked our report. Let's see what will be the next one.

have fun

Andreas + Bettina

Hi all
thanks for your kind reply.

@checksix21: maybe you can make it to the Erlanger Berchkerwa wich i think is better than Octoberfest in Munich.

I will add a pic form Google Earth to give you a better impression about the region i was riding. - If you want to take a closer look search for Bayreuth, Bamberg, Coburg on your PC.

heres the pic

have fun
Andreas

Germany and "ordnung"

How many more "no motorcycles" signs will be popping up in Germany?

http://www.motorradausfahrt.de/sperrung.htm

for that matter, 30kmh on Landestrassen in the middle of nowhere...

(es ist nicht mehr wie damals war - it ain't what it used to be... after riding in Germany for over 30 years as ehemalige Gummi Kuh driver)

is it "radl" or "moppedl" in you area?
