Holy Shit! Cowwww!!!!!!
I was doing a shakedown run today for my covered bridge tour I offer. While coming around a bend a decent clip, I notice something black in the road and back off the throttle while I cover the brakes. Low and behold, it was a COW!
I downshifted and stomped on the brakes. My first thought was MORE COWS and I'm on my own. This could be deadly.I hit the high beam and turned on a signal to at least let people know I was stopped and got the cow off the road. Stubborn old broad too. Traffic started to come, I'm in all my gear and I directed them to slow down. They looked at me like I was crazy...then I pointed to the cow. Then a farmer stops to tell me he thinks it's a friend of his and takes off. Now what the hell am I supposed to do? Where I grew up on the farm, when a neighbors cow got loose, you waited till they came and got the damned thing! Finally, the cow (will call her Betsy) decides she's had enough and makes a break for it. I hop back on the bike, blare the horn to get her back off the road, and alert traffic. More traffic comes, and I'm motioning them away, as I follow Betsy. Yes, Betsy and I are now apparently taking a leisurely stroll..fucking wonderful. I have a late day appointment, and I'm escorting a cow for a stroll on a warm spring day on a KY country back road. As I'm strolling with Betsy I thought to myself, this is fucking hilarious! Nobody is going to believe this, hell i don't even believe this! After a 1/4 mile, Betsy finally stops. My clutch is a bit warm, the bike is hot from the idling and parade speeds...I just want to ride! Another farmer comes, mumbles something in hillbilly that even I didn't understand and Betsy lays down in a field off the road. I told the farmer the other guy was sending someone to get Betsy, and I left him and Betsy, for the road!

You must have good country manners, that is never a bad thing.

its country etiquette, thats how people in remote (back in the old days of course) survived by helping each other. if youre really nice, youll go back and help the farmer fix his fence!

Cows on the road
I was on a ride and there was a bull out on the road. We all got past him but one guy. We pissed the bull off so much that he became aggressive. He was charging the last three riders . Two of them got by but not the last guy. That bull was set, he know just what to do.The rider made a good decision I think, he turned around.

I encountered a huge red sow once on a lonely highway. She was trotting along happily on the shoulder of the road with the air of a lady with a definite destination in mind, so I chose not to disrupt her journey.
I've herded cows and horses off the road before, and stopped at nearby houses to report them. But I wasn't going to try and change that pig's mind. She had places to go.

Just stand on the pegs, get your weight back a little and ride over it. It's just like the 2x4 in MSF, only a little bigger.

Last fall I was cruising up the mountain just to the north of my place, came around the corner and saw the fattest black lab I've ever seen running up the center of the road away from me. Got a little closer and realized it was a black bear !!
No problem, it was obvious that he was trying to get away from me, so I slowed and let him get off the road and up into the brush...........

I was on a ride in some mountains in eastern OR last summer and it was nearing sunset, so I was riding extremely slowly for fear of making acquaintance with a deer.
Turns out I never did see a deer, but I saw some cows around the road (no fences) and around a bend there was a whole heard having a tea party in my lane. Had to weave through the whole heard. They watched but (thankfully) didnt move and give me a hard time. Later that night I saw a cougar, but that was from my tent, not my bike. Dunno if thats good or bad... But Im still alive and ready to meet some new animals on another adventure (just not up close and personal...) BW |

Conistoga man biffed into a pregnant mommy cow last year at WMRS. Black cow running without lights. Late at night. They were within sight of camp. Dude's bike was totalled. He did a touch and go at the hospital and was home the next day. Cow went directly to the butcher. I can still hear the screech and thud in my mind. Cows kill.
