Looks like he is saving room on the left for an ADV one.

Doohan's also on track slicks, not 50/50 tires like the GS.

The difference between the two is that he is cornering on a bike that wont drag hard parts nearly so easily.

It also looks like he has already apexed and is fading to the outside of the turn with LOTS of turn left.

Doohan had lots of strange riding quirks that he made work. Certainly not saying that he was not skilled, just that his style really should not be used as an example of "the way it's done".

Cant really learn to ride by watching someone or reading books about, just doesn't work like that, most likely forget everything you read, the first corner you turn, and no matter how experienced you might be, on a strange road, the line is not allways the perfect one.

Just because it can be done that way, doesn't mean it should be nor that it is the best way.

I don't know how you can judge the guy on the GS from that pic (unless you actually know that turn). The first thing I do when setting up for a turn is slide my butt over. And then when exiting the turn my butt is the last thing to get back to the centerline. So there are typically two times in many turns when I would look like that guy. I can't tell from the pic how much turn is left or whether a right-hander is coming up. It seems conceivable to me that guy simply hasn't apexed, or possibly even he did and is coming out to set up for a right sweeper.
