The real reason is to get more weight forward.

The reason "people do this" is they don't want to squish their foot when the tires slip out.

I have been known to stick a foot out on pavement and even skim my boot on the road. Usually I find myself doing it on long dual sport rides right after I come off dirt. When I have been flat tracking dirt and gravel roads for a while I just do it without thinking for a while until my brain transitions to asphalt.

So I know for a fact that it doesn't instantly rip your leg off to skim your boot on the pavement anymore than it does offroad. The only time I have ever hurt my foot or leg doing that is catching a rock on the toe offroad. It might look goofy but it doesn't hurt anything unless maybe you are a complete idiot.

If you stick a foot out as often on pavement as you do in the dirt, you either don't do that very much in the dirt............or, it's amazing you're not sporting lots of "hardware" in your lower extremities.

Good point.

As for sliding a foot on pavement often there just isn't anything to it in boots with MX tread. It is actually easier than on rock or hard pack offroad. Like I said, it always take me a few turns coming off dirt to get my brain spun up to my street bike riding "style".

He also rides one of these?

If, and or when the tire runs out of real estate, where would you want your leg?
