A good rider doesn't get distracted. There are a ton of more distracting things out on the road than a guy on the side with a camera: Cars swerving all over the place changing lanes randomly, and turning left without looking for anything less massive than a 4-wheeler are just a few of them.

A bad rider is going to be distracted by his own belly button. A bad rider blames others for the reason why he "had to lay it down."

Yeah, the other person was "at fault" and violated your Right of Way(tm) -DEAL with it. This is what it is like on a motorcycle. Learn to compensate for other's mistakes and know what they are going to do before they do it and not be in their kill zone.

In the OP, that sportbike rider did just that. He was riding well within his safety margin and was able to neatly pull over when some clueless poser on a GS came over the line and ate a big chunk of what was supposedly "his" territory. Had he been locked into a line where he needed that chunk of "his" lane then we might be having an RIP fellow ADV-er's widow needs money thread instead of thrashing the guy for a dozen or so pages. At the very least it would have been a nasty faceplant thread.

But sportbike guy was prepared, had a plan, saw it coming, pushed on the right bar a little bit harder and tightened his line and let the clueless idiot slide by in his lane with feet to spare. Pat him on the back. He gets to live another day and so does the idiot who screwed up.

Just another day on the Dragon I guess.

This assumes that once a rider attains 'goodness', it is a
permanent quality like... say... breathing. If only life were like that.

I think a more accurate statement would be that a rider does not get distracted when he or she is riding well.

Sadly, most humans move often between the land of the human and the realm of the gods. That's why the great Roger Clemens ... in spite of his
numerous Cy Young awards pitched some really shitty games and why
Valentino Rossi falls of his horse from time to time.

In fact, the likes of Nicky Hayden have claimed to get distracted from time to time.

I know it's tough to embrace, but even the good get it wrong from time to time.

Life's like that.

It's what makes all this dumping on the poor GS riding s.o.b. so silly.

It's all a moment in time for which there is nothing but speculation.

Didn't you just explain the entire event for us line by line from a picture you looked at detective firefly?

I'll just draw you a picture (again).

This isn't missing a shift, or going a little wide in a corner or being a bit unsmooth.

This is just plain bad riding. Period. There are no ifs, ands or buts about it.

If you accept that this kind of stuff "just happens" then you are a danger to yourself and everyone else on the road with you. I suggest you give up riding before you make your wife, and perhap's someone else's wife/husband a widow/widower too.

Hang up (whatever it is you are paying attention to besides RIDING) and ride.

Ass****?

No, he's just an opinionated rider that will live long because he remains focused when he rides.

If a rider pulls an asshat move and can’t learn from his asshatery then I too think he should go back to four wheels.

You ever race?

Reading your posts here give me the almost overwhelming desire to race you, just to see how I stack up...

Photoshop lies.

But one thing I don't have to lie about is that there was SOMETHING distracting that rider to go over the C-line like that into oncoming traffic.

It doesn't have to be a phone. It could have been a full bladder, thinking about his wife's sweaty pie waiting for him at home, an empty stomach, booze he drank that morning or even too much the night before, a head cold, a sore pussy/monkey-ass hurting him because he had so much shit strapped to the seat he can't move around at all (WTF is in that box?), or just a crappy attitude that says that going over the double-yellow into ONCOMING TRAFFIC (I'm not even going to talk about crossing the yellow when you have a good sight-line to pass or even just wanting to use the entire road -there WAS someone there!)

Distracted is distracted. Some people need a phone to be stupid. Others are just naturals at it. It doesn't matter. The end result is the same and the undoctored photo is enough to show that plain enough. My little photoshop exercise just points out how bad it was. He might as well have been talking on the phone -for the results were the same.

I'm too old and broken to race anymore. It takes too long to heal up these days. besides I do not at present have a bike worthy of a race. Just my little DR650. Did you make it out to the Trask last weekend? What a great gathering of ADVnuts. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showt...447375&page=45

If you define a "good" rider as someone who NEVER gets distracted then yeah I'm not a good rider.

The best riders in the world make mistakes, and get distracted, because they're human, to say or think otherwise is...bullshit.
