We gave the KLR a lot of ribbing (by way of Nicole) but I think it would probably be much improved if you pulled out the lowering link. Aside from losing an inch of travel, I think it threw off the geometry. It's better to have a proper-handling bike that's too tall than a poor-handling bike you can flat-foot.

Believe it or not I still hope to finish this RR someday...

Jeff

you know, i think the lowering link is out. its a damn sight higher than it looks in those photos, it's got different plastic, a bigger tank, a new muffler, and some other stuff. I reckanized it from the lic. plate. It runs great, no problems yet, i got it at 14k miles and i've put on another 1k as a commuter bike. Eventually it's going to brazil tho.

Finish that RR yo!

OK OK! More than five years later... where were we? Oh, yeah, waking up on the beach in San Evaristo:

P4150220.JPG

La Paz, and breakfast, was a couple hours south. But we couldn't resist checking out the landscape of Baja:

P4150221.JPG

Then I spaced out for just long enough to nearly throw the 990 in a ditch. I was just dumb and not paying attention; that could have really sucked. However, this was the first time I noticed that at some point I had crushed the stock bash plate:

P4150234.JPG

You'd think I would remember a hit like that, but the truth is I really just don't know which hit was responsible. That poor bike. The stock 990 suspension is way too soft for this kind of riding - a problem that Superplush has since fixed :)

The gravel road south into La Paz is pretty:

P4150240.JPG

Didn't really take many pictures in La Paz. At this point we had eaten most of our two weeks and the return trip was going to be slab. We didn't even make it down to the cabos. We did, however need some welding.

The welds on my rack came loose (picture is pre-weld) and the rack mounts on Jon's aluminum subframe just snapped right off (picture is post-weld):

P4150245.JPG
P4150247.JPG

Protip: Welding aluminum is pointless, Jon's welds snapped right off in short order. The right answer is "carry less stuff" and "carry it in soft bags".

At this point we are heading north, towards home. Booo hooo! Nothing to do but drown our sorrows in beer and lobster. Damn I miss Baja...

P4150249.JPG

Heading home, we ran into this guy, maybe in Ciudad Constitución? He was an advrider, heading south, and he recognized me because he had just read my Panama RR. I got to feel famous for another five minutes :) Unfortunately five years later I do not remember his name:

Mini Advrider Meetup

These pictures are from Mulegé, I think:

P4160254.JPG

P4160253.JPG

That was pretty much the end of Baja, it looked like this for most of the way home:

P4170261.JPG

We stopped in LA to spend a night at a friend's Tiki party. My girlfriend got a ride down from SF so we could ride back the remaining distance:

P4190268.JPG

She and I have since ridden 2-up to Alaska, done the western TAT, and had several other motorcycle motorcycle adventures on the 990. Oh, and last year - after walking the 600-mile length of the Camino de Santiago together - I married her :)

No writeup, but here are the pictures:

Lots of food porn, Spanish style. One nice thing about walking: More wine than you get in a typical RR!
