MotoGP: Moo-Jello (Spoilers)

After a 2-week hiatus, the circus resumes at the Autodromo Internazionale di Mugello, located in the Tuscany region of north-central Italy. At 5.245km in length, the Mugello circuit is one of the longest on the current MotoGP schedule with its length punctuated by drastic elevation changes and high-speed chicanes. The 1.141km main straight is also one of the longest in MotoGP, where terminal speeds flirt with 320kph. This leads directly into a blind rise to the fearsome downhill right that was allegedly the inspiration for the "Rossi Screams" helmet. The rest of the track is an exciting mixture of fast sweepers, quick direction changes and long 'parabolica' corners, without any overly tight hairpins or stop-and-go sections to break up the flow.

Despite his jokes that turn one terrifies him, Valentino Rossi is the undisputed King of Mugello with 9 wins in 13 years, including the last 7 running. Although only down a single point in the championship standings to team mate Jorge Lorenzo, the Doctor desperately needs to cleanse his palate of the bad taste that Le Mans certainly left lingering. Two pit stops, a crash and a ride-through penalty relegated Rossi to DFL in France and he surely wants a victory to restore his momentum.

Over the wall at Fiat Yamaha, Jorge Lorenzo needs no such confidence boost. Lorenzo looked indomitable at LeMans in the wet and in the dry, turning an incredible mastery of the Bridgestone rain tire into a resounding statement that he's a legitimate contender for the world championship.

The fastest man at Lemans, Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa, is not letting his injured knee slow him down. Despite being astride a RC212V that he claims has to run maximum traction control to contain it's peaky nature, Pedrosa took an incredible 5+ seconds off his hapless team mate Andrea Dovizioso in the last 7 laps to take 3rd place.

Casey Stoner comes into Ducati's "home" race tied for second in the championship and having earned 9 points more than at this time last year. Ducati has never won at Mugello with Stoner's 2nd place finish last year their best effort. Whatever the outcome, the "Red Army" of Ducatista stationed at the Correntaio corner will doubtlessly be urging him on by sheer force of will.

The human interest story of this year's season has been the gutsy return of Marco Melandri to the pointy end of the field aboard the orphan Kawasaki/Hayate. Maccio took advantage of the weather and resultant field-shuffling to take an astounding 2nd at LeMans. Although there has been much speculation about renewed factory technical support, there has been no official word as to whether Kawasaki will step up.

After Lemans, there was some commentary about how sad the state of affairs is in MotoGP that it took the confusion of a race in the rain and resultant missteps to make a race interesting. Hopefully, Mugello will restore some faith in the "premiere class's" entertainment value. With this weekend's WSBK race in a different timezone, at least we won't be in a quandary of which race to watch live and which one to TIVO.

Hayate (疾風?) is a Japanese word which can mean "hurricane", although in that sense, it is usually pronounced as shippū (しっぷう?)

That's possible when you weigh less than a sack of dog food and you could hide your twin brother and you behind the fairing simultaneously.

Stoner notwithstanding, the Ducs are all running comparable lap times.

Wow, I cannot even imagine what it's like to brake hard from 217mph. By the way Roadracing World thinks Mugello is in Spain
