“die ziege” – Vintage Airhead ISDT Enduro Project

First off, this thread is a continuation of Vintage Airhead Enduro - forming a plan where many of you helped me identify some details on this bike:

1980 ISDT GS

I am about 4 months behind on everything in my life, including this project. I was hoping to be at the point I am now back in January! Oh, well. Such is life…

I really have 2 goals for this bike:
- to look very similar to the one pictured above
- to perform similar to the G650xchallenge that I rode for the past year or so.

My first step was to figure out what we really where working towards. Why re-invent the wheel? I figured if the 1980 GS bike competed in the ISDT, its geometry must have been set up pretty good. I really did not want to start from scratch so I will just steal some of the ideas from this bike and go tweak/adjust from there.

So I took one of the pictures and marked up the dimensions that I thought I needed and sent the pic off to an engineering friend. He imported the pic into one of those fancy CAD programs and provided me with all the dimensions below:

To jump ahead a bit, here is what the project looked like this past weekend:

I know, it just looks like a pile of crap! Trust me, a lot of thought/time/$$$ went into that pile of crap!

To be continued…

Dimensions

Love the dimensions it propted me to run a ruler over a G/S and it really is quite similar to a G/S with a 4 inch swing arm extension. The swing arm is longer but the wheel base is about the same as standard. As the steering head angle is 28 degrees, about the same as standard, it suggest the head was brought back after jacking up the frame.
It all looks incredibly doable. I look forward to future posts and wish you the best of luck with this project.

the donor bike

I am sure I over paid but this bike came with some of the main stuff that I needed: 1978 R80/7 frame, 4-speed w/kick start, R75 top end, 37/11 rear…

and the game began

and a lot of stuff I didn’t need: complete front end, fenders, tank, tires, headers, sub-frame, etc…

My wife said “wow, nice looking bike”. A day later after I stripped off all the stuff that I won’t be using she said “what happened???”!

What is the headlight / number plate from? It looks just like the one on the prototype.

are you sure the rear wheel is 19"? I would say 18" from the picture but I may be wrong.

I'm just saying that if you measure the whole bike from that dimension maybe you are 5% over sized...

is it right what I'm saying?

UFO Vintage Plastics Universal Headlight, tough to get in the US. I purchased the plastics from MDRacingProducts in the UK

Yup, details to follow on that...

Yes, 18" rear rim. The 18" measurement is the I.D. of the tire. Rim with the side lip measures roughly 19" overall O.D.

Nope , sorry I was walking through the swap meet at the Barberfest last year and spotted this. The guy was getting it fired up then rode off, all I got was these three shots.
