Admo Dual Sport Adventure 5/6/09

Here I am, a New Yorker in Vegas, jonesing for his bikes...A quick Google search brings up AdMo tours. They're great on the phone and seem to offer just what I need. I book online as per their instructions.

I have the choice of the KTM EXC 450, a Suzuki DRZ 400 or a Honda CRF 230. One of the ladies mentioned the possibility of a lowered KTM. (I'm 5' 7")I noted that in the comment section of the order form and crossed my fingers.

The bill: Bike rental, 6-7 hours of riding, guide, power bars, Gatorade, gear (I brought my own helmet and gloves) pick up and delivery from the Treasure Island Hotel Casino $450.

Like a dumbass I left my camera home, but I'm going to get one just for this trip......To be continued

Here we go!

I had just finished breakfast when my cell (also the camera for this report) started ringing..It was Rich, my guide telling me he was 10 minutes out...I was psyched! My first desert off road adventre was about to start!

Sure enough he rolled in with 2 DRZs in tow 10 minutes later! I'm thinking I'm going to need a ladder for this bike. The lowered KTM I was hoping for was out on another ride. Anyway, Rich is very friendly and we talk about my (lack of) experience and while away the 40 minute ride to Primm. Rich has made his many hobby's his career. He is an EMT for the Ski Patrol in the winter, as well as an ATV instructor and horse wrangler.

Primm

I don't know what I was expecting in Primm, but it wasn't an enclosed parking garage! We pulled the trailer into the garage and parked. Rich pulled both bikes off the trailer without any of my help while I ran accross the street to use the restroom.

I returned to find a nice duffle bag full of (mostly foreign to me) gear! I confessed to never wearing any of this stuff except the helmet and gloves that I brought. He proceeded to patiently tell me how to put the shin guards UNDER the pants and the elbow guards OVER the jersey...I still managed to get the chest protector on backwards:-p

The Breifing

Rich tells me we are going to be riding about 80 miles today. We are starting the ride with a part of the Enduro Race track used for the Terrible 250, then we are riding a wash, a dry lake bed as well as checking out a gold and silver mine. He says we are going to ride some different terrain to see how I do and make a decision down the road which way to go. He also tells me he is going to keep a large distance between us as to not blind me with his dust, and to scope out any potentially dangerous hazards. He promises me he will wait for me at any turn as to not lose me.

He instructs me that there are several kinds of rattlers, as well as Copperhead snakes, Gila Monsters and Tarantulas, so watch were I step ......none of this scares me as much as climbing on that 38" seat! I'm only 5' 7"! Both my bikes at home (Yamaha TW-200 and BMW G650 Xcountry) have seats just under 32" and I'm usually on my toes unless someone is riding pillion.

OK, enough whining, I pack my back pack as recommended, 4 waters, granola bar, one Banana and an Orange, my wallet, cellphone/camera, light jacket (WHY?) and hang a leg over the bike.

It's friggin huge! I barely can get one leg down, but give Rich the thumbs up! I turn the key, push the starter, shift it into first, raise the kickstand (The only time I could do it with out help) and take off...... So far so good! I pull into the parking lot and start to get a feel for the behemoth. Under way it's a pussycat! I love this bike! Excellent first gear, lot's of POWER! Rich wants to see some slow speed maneuvers and figure eights in the parking lot.......... and then we turn onto a nice dirt packed road and headed out!

Ist Down!

After a few minutes of scrutiny, Rich blasts off down the road. I can just see his cloud of dust about 1/4 mile ahead.....I'm loving this! the terrain is getting a little more technical, but the DRZ just eats it up. I'm grinning ear to ear....Man how cool is this!........ Whoa! The terrain gets suddenly sandy! I remember Rich's instructions: Get on the tank, keep up your speed and keep a loose grip on the bars...it works! This is so cool!..........the trip meter is just about 5 miles now and BEEP BEEP BEEP..I turn my head expecting to see a truck or car, but no, it's Rich! He motions to go the other way. I slow, turn around and pull up next to him..."Didn't you see me make that turn back there?" Ummm nope:-) Rich now knows he must keep a sharp eye on me!

A short distance down the road, we make a sharp left....I take it a little too hot, my rear wheel starts to slide in the sand, I put my foot down and it hits nothing but air! I drop the bike for the first time within 5 miles of starting.... Uh oh, this could be a long day. Damn! I love this bike, but jeeze I can't reach the ground at all:-p

2nd Down!

With nothing hurt but my pride, we head back out on the trail...this is a steep, technical part that will bring us to 7500ft asl.......the temps are already in the 90's and climbing...I'm sweating and getting lazy...I get off the pegs and try and ride through some choppy terrain from the seat...The rear end got loose, I put my foot down, nothing but air and I dropped the bike again...twice in 10 miles! Jeeze! OK, NEVER get off the pegs...I right the monster myself, panting, sweating, swearing...Rich rides up..."What happened?" I said "I don't know, but I need a break!" we took a 5 minute break, I downed half a water bottle and poured the rest over my head. I felt MUCH better. I finished that section of the trail with renewed vigor......

I'm really starting to enjoy myself now!

After another 10 miles or so, I really started to feel good about the way I was riding. While I was not going to win any Enduro races, I felt much more comfortable with the ever changing terrain. In fact the loose sand and gravel felt very similar to the silty roads I learned to ride as a teen in the coal mining region of eastern PA. I was channeling my youth and it felt great....After awhile we stopped at an abandoned gold & silver mine.....

As we continue.............

The trip meter read about 25 miles by this time...no more dropped bikes and I was feeling the best I had all day even with the temps now close to 100 degrees. Rich is an awsome guide. He teaches me about the different Cactus and plants and is truly dedicated to my enjoyment of the ride.....
