Wheeler Monument?
Has anyone here ridden out to the Wheeler Monument (aka Wheeler Geological Area), near Creede? Here's a brief description:
http://sangres.com/features/wheelergeologic.htm I've heard that the road requires 4WD, but don't know any details as far as how well a KLR ridden by a dirt noob such as myself would fare. Has anyone ridden there? Thanks, Dave |

I have not actually gone to Wheeler, but I have been all around it on my KLR.
OHVs used to be able to do Half Moon Pass in and out of Wheeler years ago, but not anymore. Nowadays I am pretty sure it is an easy dirt road in and a hike from the parking area to the rock formations. Steve |

We did it two up, it's easy unless it rains (there is one section that gets real muddy). It's about 15 miles of jeep road, after the county road ends. once you are there it's a fantastic, short hike (about 4 miles?) It's not a challenging road. I recommend camping at the end of the county road, riding in early in the morning, hiking the whole loop and riding out. It will take most of the day just because you'll love the hike.

Thanks
Thanks for the scouting, Steve and Wayne. I'll have to make it up there soon, before it gets too late in the season.

It's a pretty good dirt road from the Highway by the Rio grande up for quite a ways. It does get chunky rocky the last 3-4 miles as I recall. I saw dirt bikes and ATV's on that rough section, but nothing like a GS. Just have to pick your way around rocks sticking up.

I took the kids and camped at Wheeler this last week. We went in the 4RNR. The last 14 miles took two hours going as fast as we could in the tin can. bumpy and rough, bouncing up and down. A bike could do much faster. On my KLR I think it would be 45 minutes for those last 14 miles.
